Farewell to the Wii: Unsung Wii Games

Just off the top of my head:

Zangeki no Reginleiv - this was done by the EDF folks, but you used slashing motions with the Wii Remote to swing a sword rather than shoot guns, but same general principle as EDF

Fatal Frame 4 - Probably my least favorite in the series, but still Fatal Frame regardless. Worth a look, especially with the patch done by fans to make it English.

Another Code R - This made it to Europe, but never to the US. Not much of a game in the traditional sense, but a solid story game that's at least partially adventure game in nature.

Captain Rainbow - Done by the devs of Chibi Robo and Giftpia (another game that never hit the US), it's a pretty weird game that starts off by finding Birdo's vibrator...

Disaster: Day of Crisis - Kind of a trash game, but over-the-top and wacky in the right ways. It was a fun, if mostly forgettable romp.

Line Attack Heroes - This one only hit WiiWare, but Nintendo showed it at a point to US-based audiences. You collect guys in an arena and then use them as a big giant people sword. It was a pretty shallow game, but fun for a few hours.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom - The original Japanese release of the game has some different content from the US release that's pretty good. Can't remember all the details, but there are some fun mini-games that never made it here.

Ougon no Kizuna and Earth Seeker are a couple others I've heard about that are good, but haven't played personally.

Glad the list is of use! Chessa and I really enjoyed putting this one together. While everyone loves to dump on the Wii, it actually had a bunch of great stuff that's totally unlike anything you've played before.

There's a bunch of stuff that never got localized in America that's also really great and it'd be fun to put together another feature highlighting some of that stuff as well.

I agree about the 3 separate storylines and how they all came together at the end in a very believable way. That was one of the best parts of how the show was executed.

I'm hoping that if/when they do more, they've already got the general thing figured out and storyboarded. I'd like to see Season 2 come together just as great as this season did. Based on how it ended, it seems like they have a direction. I'm also hoping they don't kill the whole thing by overextending it.

I enjoyed Stranger Things as well, and I'd agree that people are overstating things. It's a solid show that's well-thought out and well-executed. It hits on a bunch of inspiration, which includes stuff like Twin Peaks, X-Files, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, Close Encounters, and even Silent Hill. If you grew up in the 80s/90s, it just rubs that nostalgia spot so damn well that I expect it's why most people are going crazy.

By parsing the nostalgia out of the equation, I think it's a well-done show and if/when they do more, I'll be excited to watch it. I enjoyed the run and it was consistently engaging. The one part of it that is so fucking amazingly good though is the music. I mean, holy shit, the music was awesome.

Finally Playing Wii Games!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is probably the best 3D Mario game that Nintendo's made. Didn't much care for the original Galaxy, but 2 just expanded on all of the ideas and did them so much better. Plus it gets damn tough at the end if you go for all the stars.

I need to check out Dolphin. It's one of those things I've just never bothered with because I didn't have a gaming rig, but since I do now, it's probably time I go for it.

Also I saw you mention Klonoa in the comments above - the Wii game is totally awesome. It's a remake of the original and they did a phenomenal job. One of my favorite games on the system.

If you need some Wii games to check out, I suggest the ones mentioned in our Unsung Wii Games feature.

You should definitely rectify that. Also, be sure to check out the spiritual successor, Child of Eden, which is also amazing.

Come on, we all know Viewtiful Joe is a GameCube game before it's a PS2 game :)

Kidding aside, I'm glad you're finally playing it! It's a damn great game, hard as hell though. The follow-on games aren't of the same caliber, but 2 is at least passable.

Not sure how underappreciated they were, but the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner games were pretty damn good. At the very least, they were overshadowed by the Persona games. They incorporate some Tales-like gameplay with the staples of the SMT series, including Demon negotiation and capture. I'd love to see Atlus revisit the series this gen.

AM2R is INCREDIBLE. You should totally give it a shot. It's scratching that 2D Metroid itch incredibly well. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it and I'm absolutely in love. I think I'll put together a review when I'm done because that game is good enough that it deserves a proper review and an official publish from Nintendo.
