I think we still get great value and content in games regardless of DLC. Now there are some exceptions and Kingdoms of Amalur with its online pass for content is an example of a bad one. Batman Arkham City is another probably better example in regards to the Catwoman missions. However, I do agree with you in terms of patches. A lot of companies release these games incomplete and figure they'll just fix it with a patch down the road and that's not okay. However, I believe that this is usually again at the fault of publishers pushing the developers to reach a release date.
I can personally say that a good deal of the games I have on my Steam account I first pirated. Usually just to see if my computer could run it but still. The used games market does keep piracy in check in that it gives people another legitimate option if they can't find the game they want used. It's again in regards to my stance on PC gaming. If you can't find the game brand new in stores or on Steam or a similar service, you're screwed. You basically have to pirate it if you want to play it. Buying a used copy of a PC game is pointless due to dumb crap like CD keys and registration.
More demos would be appreciated, which is something I actually mentioned in the podcast. From a legal standpoint, it's not actually illegal, I know, but from a moral standpoint, it is wrong. Your paying for the internet connection itself as well as unlimited data and bandwidth, as well as unrestricted access to any website you can find (with a few exceptions and other extraneous things like parental controls). Obviously, I don't find it so morally apprehensiveness but let us be honest with ourselves, there's sharing your copy of Condemned with a friend and then there's sharing your copy of Condemned with the world.
Oh and screw CD keys. They are one of the things I hate about PC gaming and it shouldn't be used to curb piracy. If anything, it's just like the online passes in that it limits your ability to play your own game. That's what happened to me with my copy of Fable, as well as with other games.
