New vs. Old: My Used Pirated Conundrum

Posted on 02/14/2012 at 03:29 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I think we still get great value and content in games regardless of DLC. Now there are some exceptions and Kingdoms of Amalur with its online pass for content is an example of a bad one. Batman Arkham City is another probably better example in regards to the Catwoman missions. However, I do agree with you in terms of patches. A lot of companies release these games incomplete and figure they'll just fix it with a patch down the road and that's not okay. However, I believe that this is usually again at the fault of publishers pushing the developers to reach a release date.

I can personally say that a good deal of the games I have on my Steam account I first pirated. Usually just to see if my computer could run it but still. The used games market does keep piracy in check in that it gives people another legitimate option if they can't find the game they want used. It's again in regards to my stance on PC gaming. If you can't find the game brand new in stores or on Steam or a similar service, you're screwed. You basically have to pirate it if you want to play it. Buying a used copy of a PC game is pointless due to dumb crap like CD keys and registration.

More demos would be appreciated, which is something I actually mentioned in the podcast. From a legal standpoint, it's not actually illegal, I know, but from a moral standpoint, it is wrong. Your paying for the internet connection itself as well as unlimited data and bandwidth, as well as unrestricted access to any website you can find (with a few exceptions and other extraneous things like parental controls). Obviously, I don't find it so morally apprehensiveness but let us be honest with ourselves, there's sharing your copy of Condemned with a friend and then there's sharing your copy of Condemned with the world.

Oh and screw CD keys. They are one of the things I hate about PC gaming and it shouldn't be used to curb piracy. If anything, it's just like the online passes in that it limits your ability to play your own game. That's what happened to me with my copy of Fable, as well as with other games.

A: I disagree. I like DLC when its done well (Fallout 3).

B: Disagree with the developers part, agree with the publishers part. Some really do care about what the fans say.

C: The used game market can never go away or piracy will run rampant and something that needs to be kept intact as an option, just like other forms of media.

D: Your reasoning about the digital copies makes sense. That's probably why Steam is able to make such great deals.

Huh. I always wondered who was buying these games.

The King Of Fighters XIII Review

I felt the HD gauge didn't really add anything. I do use it but I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't there either.

I don't like the game being too aggressive because players who don't play that way are basically out of luck. I myself am usually an aggressive player but that isn't fair to those who aren't. It's a balance issue.

Like I said in the review, this is only for KOF fans, and I'm one of them so I personally would get this game when the price went down but I understand why others wouldn't. This still is a lesser title in the KOF series to me.

The AAA Problem

I just want to say that I noticed you saying the word "Art" to describe video games and I feel the need to tell you that in two weeks, there will be a PixlTalk podcast about video games as art. You may be interested in that.

Outstanding piece, Jesse.

Many of my favorite titles this generation were downloadable titles like Castle Crashers and Braid. I tend to find overblown triple A titles to usually not reach the hype built up for it. They're not bad games but they probably aren't worth the millions of dollars sunk into them. There are exceptions (Batman: Arkham Asylum comes to mind) but there does need to be more of a tiered system of how games are developed but then only one tier in regards to marketing and promotion.

I've reported on a lot of these layoff stories and it really is sad. Even successful companies like Electronic Arts are laying off employees. Clearly this model isn't working when you lose people even when you have big profits.

Kameo 2 Development Cancelled

I started thinking about Kameo: Elements of Power right now and I did a search look for any content about this game. I was rather disappointed to find out that a sequel was in the works but was canceled.

I played that game to completion and I believe I 100% it. The controls could be a bit odd but it was a great game. Definitely one of the better launch titles for the Xbox 360.

Sad panda.

I've heard about this title for a long time but I've never seen this much attention paid to it. I learned a lot and this title needs to have more attention paid to it. It's a shame it wasn't released.

SoulCalibur V Review

Hmm. Still want to play it, although it sounds like what all of the Soul Calibur games have done in the past: improve some things but screw up others.
