Final Fantasy Retrospective: The Seventh Generation Years

Posted on 02/26/2013 at 12:10 PM | Filed Under Feature

I picked up FFXIII at launch and I only put about 15 hours into it. I loved the Paradigm Shift battle system. I found it very fun and fast-paced, but the story just didn't pull me in, and the linear style didn't match with my old-world expectations from RPGs. I still want to put in the extra time to get passed that "20 hour" demo period, but we'll see.

I wanted to try FFXIV from the get-go, but the tragic launch waylayed that. I'm anxious to see what A Realm Reborn brings to the table.

Excellent retrospective. Don't listen to the anonymous trolls in the other posts.

Final Fantasy Retrospective: The PlayStation 2 Years

When FFX released I really enjoyed it. I didn't finish the game, simply because my end-game file was corrupted (sigh), but I really liked the game. The colourful world was a nice change of pace and it looked spectacular on the new PS2.

I bought FFIX, HDD and all and I was one of those that didn't get passed the trial period. It sounds weird, but even in an MMO, I prefer a solo experience.

FFXII was a great game, and I'm a sucker for Ivalice so that all worked for me. I enjoyed the Gambit system, although the License System was a little lacking.

I liked each of these games in their own way. I didn't actually own FF7 myself, but watched a friend play through the entirety of the game. I had my own PSX when FF8 came out, so I had that game. I was obsessed with the card game and GFs at the time, but the love story got a little old. I loved FF9 and it's throwback style, but it was lost on most people that hadn't cut their teeth on the NES/SNES titles.

Once again, excellent retrospective!

Yeah, I can't help but enjoy Halo games, although I hated ODST and I didn't even play Reach. I've been a fan of FPS since the Doom days, so I like to pick one up now and then. Have you played the Goldeneye remake? I really liked that one!

Thanks! I have indeed played Tactics Ogre. I didn't play it until the PSP remake a few years back, but I became completely obsessed with it for a few months there. I absolutely adored it!

Thanks, you too! Even if the gaming industry tanked I think I could just play my old RPG faves over and over again, haha.

FF VI is my favourite game of all time. I still tend to play it yearly or bi-yearly. I'm gearing up to playing it again this year, but this time the GBA version on my Gameboy Player. Can't wait.

Again, these articles are fantastic!

Ah, the NES GBA. How I envy you! I picked up an SP last year or so that was broken at a flea market and pieced it back together. It ended up not being one of the ones with extra light setting, but it's still good.

I snagged a GB Player recently on eBay and I'm looking forward to playing some old GBA games on a TV and see how they look.
