We all have unpopular opinions about games. Some of mine include that I don't think most Sonic games are very good, and that I also think Kirby is better than Mario. Another one of my unpopular opinions is that I don't like Earthbound very much. In fact, when I was first trying out to write for The Dallas Morning News, I had to submit two reviews: one for a game I liked, and one for a game I didn't like. Since I was big into 16-bit RPGs at the time, the review of the game I did like was for FF6. And for the one I didn't like? You guessed it, Earthbound.
The two main reasons why I don't like it is that one, I feel that the battle system is antiquidated, especially when compared to more fun battles in games like FF6. I just felt like I had stepped back to the clunky NES RPG days. The other reason why I don't like it is the story. Normally story isn't that important to me, it's only important in an RPG just to tell you where to go next. And that's where the problem lies in Earthbound. The story is so nonsensical that it's hard to tell where to go sometimes. When the game was released in the US, it came with a strategy guide for a reason.
Since I can play Earthbound easily now on my SNES Mini Classic, I'm willing to give it a second chance now. But it's also not as big of a priority for me to do so since I have so much other stuff to review and play. But I will say one good thing about Earthbound. it really pioneered good RPG translation. Before this, even great RPGs like FF6 were a bit of a stiff and clunky read. But games like Earthbound and Super Mario RPG really paved the way for better game translations.
