I feel your pain. I just took mine in to a 3rd party place and they told me it's going to be $100 if they indeed can fix it. If they can't I will have to go collect the body in a couple of weeks.
Given the sheer number of unplayed or barely played PS3 games in my collection there's no way I can do without it.
I don't want to buy one of the new flimsy plastic models either. First of all they are clearly poorly constructed and what's with the sliding drive cover anyway? The guy at the console hospital told me he has a whole bunch of them in for repair already because the blu ray reader breaks really easily and is a much crappier version than the one in our old launch models.
