I think first heard about Fantasy Zone when I was looking for games to get for the Sega Master System. I liked the game well enough. But I was really impressed when I discovered the arcade version on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Such great music.

Agreed. When it wasn't until many years after SMW that it dawned on me that the game didn't have quite as many interesting power-ups as SMB3. But I still really enjoy both games regardless of their differences.
I also love me some Donkey Kong Country (and DKC2)!

For me, Yoshi's Island wins favorite platformer on the SNES, but only due to its hand-drawn visual style. But truth be told, I still haven't beaten the game. It's been a very long time since I've made an honest attempt to play through to the end. I remember it got difficult to a point where I couldn't seem to progress forward. Can't remember if I kept dying or maybe just got hung up on a level design I couldn't solve.
But I do want to start fresh and attempt to beat Yoshi's Island at least once.

Like you and SanAndreas mentioned, I agree that F-1 Race was more about the 4 player adapter than anything else. My brother and never had other friends around to play it with of course. In fact, he was narrowing that game from a friend, so we didn't have the 4 player adapter anyway.

Yeah, those hairpin turns are the worst. It wouldn't be so bad if the lead CPU car also had to slow down or otherwise made a mistake now and then. But the game gives no such consession.

If memory serves correctly, I think you have to remove any metal armor and weapons and used wooden versions of them (or something like that) until a turning point with one of the boss encounters when you can equip everything again.

Hey Cary, I just read this blog and immediately listened to the first episode of your new podcast. I really enjoyed hearing you and Jeff talk about your favorite 5 games. Sounds like you guys are off to a good start! I hope to check out episode 2 at some point this week.

Stage Select:
My first pick is the battle music from Persona 4 called "It's time to Make History". I am very late to the Persona series, only having played P4 last year with the Square Roots Podcast. I loved how much the game embraces music with lyrics in an RPG and I never tired of the countless battles I entered while experiencing the story. I'm not sure how it compares with Persona 5, but it certainly got me interested in playing it at some point.
My second pick- Recently I subscribed to Apple Music and got curious enough to search for Final Fantasy soundtracks. I wanted to see how the music evolved in the early series. When I got to the Final Fantasy III soundtrack, I discovered a song called Eternal Wind- the music that plays on the overworld map. Upon hearing the opening notes, I was floored. I had never heard NES music composed that way. It left such an impression on me that I started playing a fan-translated version of the game this week so I can experience the whole story. I love that one piece of music can move me to experience a game I otherwise would have passed up.

I remember purchasing the PS3 remake of Flashback. Are you talking about the original version getting a re-release on modern platforms? If so, I need to check that out.
