E3 2013: The Future of Final Fantasy

Posted on 07/05/2013 at 07:22 AM | Filed Under Feature

I have no interest in any of these, as I'm your standard Final Fantasy fan that hates pretty much everything after FF6 (7 was great, but hasn't aged very well.) I have to 150% agree with the fact that Nomura's character designs are tired. I swear, he must think "Okay, this characters name is _____, how many belts and zippers can I fit onto their clothing?" I'd do anything to have some classic Yoshitaka Amano character designs (whom Nomura lists as an "inspiration" yet doesn't seem to use any of his techniques or stylings). Also, the FF13 storyline is ass. I made it to Gran Pulse and couldn't help but laugh at how pathetic the storyline for 13 truly was. And the gameplay is horrendous - run down a hallway, fight a boss, watch a cutscene, run down another hallway, fight another boss, another cutscene, fight a- oh wait, the game's over. I hate to be such a naysayer, but Square Enix has shown that they have no interest in making good games or making money, because if they did, they'd make new entries in all of the Enix IP's like ActRaiser, Robotrek, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma (the Blazer series, of course), E.V.O., or even well established series' of their own. When are they finally going to make a new entry in the Chrono series, not just ports of Chrono Trigger? I loved Chrono Cross, and anything new in that universe would be fantastic - they'd be literally printing money. It's whatever, they got rid of the Active Time Battle, and instead of making choices as to how to take down enemies, FF13 has "Auto Fight" - it literally decides what attacks would be best FOR you. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Tom Clancy's The Division Preview

Love the Huxley reference haha, I imagine only a handful of people will get a chuckle out of that one purely because that's about how many people will remember it :P Here, I generated my own Tom Clancy Plot: Communists devise a scheme to smuggle an impressive amount of cocaine for ransom under the watchful eye of corrupt German officials (played by Americans with fake German accents).  The plot twists when the Communists hijack a shipment of life-saving drugs for ransom even after their original demands are met, unless an ex-con with a big heart can learn to trust humanity again and stop the Communists once and for all.  The movie ends with a mildly comical and/or ironic scene in which the Communists blow up or go to prison.  Another satisfying tale of political intrigue and personal redemption closes, and we all walk away from this movie a little wiser.

Why Sony's

I try to enjoy modern games - there's a nice handful of titles on the 360/PS3 that I enjoyed, but the idea of not having physical media upsets me - and I understand that that's the direction that the industry is moving in - and the hard drive for your console of choice will pretty much BE your physical media, but it kind of puts the kibosh on collecting, and on top of that, when the servers go down, those games will be lost forever - it's that long-term rental thing that prevents me every time I even entertain the idea of getting a next gen console.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend buying anything right away - that's how you end up being the one kid that had the TurboGrafx-16.

Exactly - I too, will be abstaining from participating in the next generation of consoles, and I'll remain blissfully with my amazing, physical copies of retro games. Because, you know, physical copies existed back then.

It's one of the best ways to play, my buddy and I drank a bottle of Blackhaus and played the shit out of it.

Sudeki was a pretty solid action RPG type game, the only reason I forgot to include it is because I remembered the Windows port and forgot that it was originally released as an exclusive :P

Stealth Bastard Deluxe Steam Key!

With wallets unslaked, with black lips baked,
We could nor laugh nor wail;
Through utter drought all dumb we stood!
I bit my arm, I sucked the blood,
And cried, A sale! a sale!

With wallets unslaked, with black lips baked,
Agape they heard me call:
Gramercy! they for joy did grin,
And all at once their Steam games drew in.
As they were playing all.

Just for clarification - Tim Follin was indeed the composer for LED Storm on the Amiga, but it was Mike Follin that wrote the music driver.

What is SEGA Spectrum? Not getting my hopes up...

If it's a console, I'd have to set aside three days for straight ORGASMING (gross, I know, but necessary). I've been longing for Sega to get their shit together, not give a shit, and re-enter to console market.
