What's With All the Sonic Hate?

Posted on 10/18/2016 at 05:54 PM | Filed Under Feature

I think the Sonic hate from the media actually comes from Sonic fans not shutting up about it. Much like the Final Fantasy VII uber fans, rabid Sonic fans come out of the woodwork constantly. From what I've seen (and experienced firsthand in retail), the really hardcore Sonic fans are obsessive to a level that few games reach, and it can be off-putting.

For the record, I never cared for the Sonic series, but I was a dyed in the wool Nintendo fan. I thought Sonic 2 was good back then, but I don't think those games hold up well over time, especially when compared to the Mario games of the same era. But to your point of revisionist history, I get annoyed with that, also. I have remarked many times on Nerds Without Pants that "Nintendo Hard" isn't some badge of honor; it stemmed from people not play testing their games. Similarly, I laugh at how Final Fantasy IX has become a darling of the Final Fantasy series, when at the time of its release the masses hated it with a firey passion.

TV SO GOOD!:D

I just started Mr. Robot and I'm loving it. Every episode looks and feels like a movie, and I can really identify with Elliot's social anxiety issus.

Super charming, and actually uses the 3D really well, like A Link Between Worlds. I need to finish it and do a review.

PixlBit has opened me up to so many new and exciting things, and I am forever thankful for that. I'm looking forward to being able to write more often coming up very soon, so expect some more content from me besides Nerds Without Pants.

You know, I'm really not sure when it comes to the iTunes reviews. I find it frustrating that if you were to Google the show you will see it on iTunes, but if you click the link it's just the advertisement page for iTunes. The goal in the next year is to get NWP onto other platforms like Stitcher and Soundcloud, but iTunes is kind of the main platform for podcasting. I'll let you know if I learn anything new, but in the meantime, just tell your friends about us and that will work wonders!

I bought a 4 year subscription to 4 Ziff Davis magazines at E3 2003, and due to the other three magazines eventually shutting down, I ended up with an extended subscription to EGM. I had every issue from 2003 to 2009 when it was closed, and I got rid of all of them. I'm kicking myself now, because my goal is to have the entire run of the original magazine. Problem is, the old issues are really expensive, and they do take up a ton of room. But I love being able to pull out an issue from, say, 1994 like I did this time and be able to look things up. I consider myself a bit of a video game historian, even if there is plenty that I don't know or have forgotten over the years.

I've been looking at more stuff for XV since I wrote this and find myself getting more excited for it. Also, looking forward to Dragon Quest Builders!

FF XI is in my top five for the series, but I haven't had much time to play XIV. But yeah, the bro thing could fall on its face, but so far I've really loved what I've seen of their interactions.

Curious! Even Final Fantasy VI? I really feel like that's not only the best Final Fantasy game, but one of the best games of all time, even though I love IV more for personal reasons. Why did you bounce off of that one?

Ultimately, I enjoyed XIII. I loved the characters and the battle system, but hated the story and the lack of exploration for the majority of the game. I don't regret playing it, and it actually is higher on my FF list than most people, but I certainly don't want it informing the future of the series.
