Funny you say "Uncharted level platforming" cause I love Uncharted, but I do feel its platforming is fairly autopilot.

I still make the distinction between adventure games with RPG elements and turn-based combat RPGs in my mind. 

Technically, aren't I playing the role of anti-alien tank craft when playing Space Invaders? 

There's something I love about all this cutesy mixed with 'CLEAR STAGE WHEN ALL ENEMIES ARE DESTROYED."

It seems like everything he likes goes over my head. I like these stories too, but I have to not question them to enjoy them.

I was honestly thinking more along the lines of he didn't get more standalone games cause Americans weren't exactly keen on playing as a Russian hero. 

Could be either/or, I guess.

I just watched my Mavs beat the Hawks and I really wish I had a copy of NBA Jam now.

Mario Strikers is great too.

I want to enjoy the history-rich environments, but these are such "check the box" games.
