I personally really enjoyed the title and I also found the fusion of some western RPG elements very interesting especially how the fact that all of your equipment show up exactly as they look in the description, which is a first for the series and I appreciated the fact that they didn't mess with the Dragon Quest gameplay formula since its already been perfected. You rarely see that in an RPG title, let alone a RPG on a portable. Of course this comes at a cost where your party is generic so your party lacks personality when compared to other JRPGs, but the characters who you meet and help in each town have enough personality to offset the fact that your party is more generic and customizable so I think they balanced it well in that regard.
I also liked that the game was both accessible enough for RPG novices and practically everybody can enjoy the title from beginning to end, and how deep it was at the same time especially if you wanted to really dig into the vocation system to truly customize your character as much as you wanted. Especially since if you change vocations, your character goes back to level 1(but your old vocations still retain their levels if you want to jump back to them), and you get to. You rarely see such a duality in a RPG where it can appeal to a more casual crowd and a more hardcore crowd so it effectively can practically appeal to everyone.
The only real disappointment that I had with this title is that the multiplayer is local only, but the single player was satisfying enough that I was able to ignore that downfall since I never really had a craving to try the multiplayer.
I also personally think the game is one of the best RPGs released this year and I really liked it more than FF:XIII and the other blockbuster RPGs that were released.
To me this game is a 5/5 and nothing less.
