Return to The BaDlands #4 - The Value of Next Gen Consoles

Posted on 02/04/2014 at 10:35 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I've only got a Wii U and I've been very happy with it. There's still very little on the horizon for the X1 and the PS4 that I'm interested in, so I don't see myself grabbing either for the time being.

The big sells for the Wii U for me was the GamePad for Off-TV Play and, of course, Nintendo properties. I think they've produced a number of killer titles already and hopefully the injection of third parties working on first party IPs will really make for a bunch of other titles filling in the release gaps.

Watched you play a bit of this. Seemed interesting, but I can see where you're coming from with the starting over every time bit. That's pretty much the dealbreaker with these types of games for me. Feels like it would eventually ensure I didn't come back for more.

With that in mind, I usually just skip stuff like this entirely.

Did you buy an Xbox One? Mistake.

That's kind of a silly way to look at it. New technology and shifts in consumer demands has shaped and changed gaming. Sony's PS3 and PS4 are a reflection of those changes, much like the 360 was. The only company really clinging to the "good ol' days" is Nintendo and that has provided for some rough times for them.

And honestly, if you feel Microsoft changed gaming negatively, you can't possibly look at the PS4 as something you want then. It's effectively a system built on the strengths and legacy of the 360, not the PS3. Furthermore, you should be happy about Sony's temporary fall from grace. In that time frame they built up a power house of development and expanded their IP dramatically. They are much better placed as a result of it and will benefit going forward.

Truthfully though, you really shouldn't get so vested in the "console war." Competition is good. You don't want companies to get blown away because it ultimately has no benefit for the consumer.

To each his own, no? Live and let live, I say. My console of choice thus far has been the Wii U and I don't see that changing any time soon. I'm sure there's something to like on every system out there - for instance, I'd love to dig into Dead Rising 3 and Resogun, but I'm not willing to plop down the cash for either system until they attract some more games that I'm interested in.

I'll be sure to bleach them before I let anyone in. Can't have people getting a virus from PixlBit!

That's how it goes, I s'pose. I think it all pays off in the end though - might not be in money, but making people's lives a little happier and having a place to belong is a pretty damn good trade off, I think. I'm very excited (as mentioned above) for these and though it's tough to do stuff like create forums, I think in the end I'll be happy that I took on the challenge. Also, a Fuji apple sounds nice Smile.

I hope you do! You know, I've spent a lot of time thinking about how they're different from blogs, despite being very similar fundamentally and I think it all comes down to the scope of the topic as well as its longevity.

Instead of lots of blogs on one topic, forums condense that down to one thread that lasts for a really long time. It also makes topics a bit more conversational. Blogs on the other hand are much more personal and allow you to talk a bit more freely about life and the things specifically on your mind. It's cool how two very similar things are applied in a mildly varied way and end up so drastically different.

My desire to write online was born from forums, so I'm very excited to have them going here and to interact in this new way with everyone!

Definitely hasn't been a walk in the park, but it's a new challenge and those are always fun. Plus now I can say I've created forums from the ground up!

In any event, I'm 99% better at this point, though I've still been feeling a little crappy in the morning and at night.
