An Announcement From Nick and Chessa

Posted on 02/17/2011 at 08:25 PM | Filed Under News

Hey, don't sign me up for babysitting without talking to me first! As far as playbits go, who knows what will happen in the future, but as of now, sticking Chris with baby-sitting duties would have to be the only way to go.

In reality, Chris and I have tossed the idea back and forth, but we've never taken a good look at trying to do any sort of Playbit setup. Additionally, I'd prefer to try to broadcast via capture card or something similar, so we wouldn't be taking grainy-ish video of a screen, which would likely mean more to post-broadcast viewers, since they wouldn't be able to talk with us at the same time.

If anyone has some recommendation of how to make that work well, send an email my way, and maybe we'll get something done. Maybe. But as of now, without that, chances are we won't add a playbit to our arsenal.

Back to the point, though: A public congrats to Nick and Chessa, I'm glad the new Nick has been a joy for both of you.

3DS Title My Garden Canceled

Posted on 02/17/2011 at 08:20 PM | Filed Under News

The pictures of this game looked great, but I personally think pictures alone didn't merit purchase, especially since EA had revealed so little about it so far. I'm not too surprised that the game was canceled, given all that.

Is the Virtual Console a Failure?

Posted on 02/17/2011 at 08:19 PM | Filed Under Feature

I spoke a little bit about this on my podcast, to sum up what I said, I think the Virtual Console hasn't really been a failure in any sense, especially since it likely inspired a handful of retro-themed games like Mega Man 9 and 10. Still, I have to say I'm disappointed, because there's so many quality titles left off the list of available games, yet we're only seeing a few games released each month.

Issue 28: Loosely-Related-to-Valentine's-Day Edition

Next issue, if I can recall, I'll be talking more about Cubivore. I completely forgot to mention ways I think a sequel could be a great thing, and ways the game could be even much better than the first.

But I can play music the real way, just not on those instruments!

Crystal Defenders Review

Typically, yeah. Sometimes it'd be immediate, sometimes I'd go a round or two without the freezing. It just really didn't work all that well, and a few times, I'd have to force the game to close in the middle of a very successful round.

Click here for a link to the review of another, more complete and stable version of the game. I have to say I agree with Nick's point of view, and had the game been of similar stability and had similar content, it would likely have received a similar review and score. Without the W3 mode, the game feels a bit light on content.

In addition, there's a similar pair of titles available on WiiWare with an "R1" and "R2" in the name. Apparently those are more story-driven and progression based, rather than being straightforward tower defense score-athons.

On a lighter note, it's nice to see Square Enix included the black bars in their promotional images.

Harmonix Goes Through Layoffs, Guitar Hero 2011 Title Canceled

Posted on 02/09/2011 at 08:35 PM | Filed Under News

Expect an editorial from me soon detailing what I believe is a good plan to move forward in the music game genre. It's... recycled from a long "Our Take" comment I had previously posted on the Harmonix sale news story, but there's new content that's making it's way into it.

In short, both companies are probably doing the right things, with layoffs and a halt of their current market practices. I don't think digital sales can carry their platforms alone, since they're more complicated and less versatile than iTunes, by comparison, so hopefully one of the two come up with a better solution soon.

Sony Seeking Out fail0verflow, PS3 Hackers

Here's an update followed by some funny: Sony's asking for the user information of people who commented on a fail0verflow video on youtube. The funny part? Apparently 'Kevin Butler' retweeted the hex code for unlocking a PS3.
