Episode 53: NWP's Summer Vacation

Posted on 09/08/2014 at 11:03 PM | Filed Under Feature

I will be talking more about East Texas next time, because John Gholson is from there, and I need to ask him how he survived as a geek, because I instantly felt out of place.

Yeah, I guess I mean I grew out of his comedy. No interest in revisiting Mork and Mindy or Aladdin or Mrs. Doubtfire. But I guess I was never really a fan, because I never had any desire in seeing any of his dramatic stuff, either. To be perfectly honest, I'm hard pressed to think of a celebrity that I would be really missing from his or her passing.

...

Okay, Mel Brooks. Probably Patrick Stewart.

Somewhere in this house I'm pretty sure I still have a casette tape loaded with music from Faxanadu, Link's Awakening, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy III.

Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition update.

Yeah, I put a good 30 hours into the PC version and I still got sucked into the PS4 version all weekend. Loving the Crusader, and I've been playing on hard, which has allowed me to already surpass my PC character's level and I've only started Act 3.

The Raid is definitely on my "need to watch" list.

Mr. Step, are you trying to claim that Science-y Morgan Freeman in Lucy was wrong? His soothing voice is so convincing!

I'm at a point where I wonder if the timed exclusive does more harm to the developer than good. I think back to BioShock. That was an Xbox 360 exclusive that had PS3 owners frothing at the mouth for, and with good reason. But when the game hit the PS3 a year later, I got a real sense that nobody cared. Xbox owners were of the "been there, played that" mindset, and PS3 owners seemed to be of the "oh, this game is good, but it's a year old now" mentality.

Hopefully, the people at Square Enix did the math and felt that the payout from Microsoft was enough to warrant limiting the audience for that game, even if it's just for  8 months or whatever. They really can't afford to make any wrong moves right now, and I'd like to continue to play new Final Fantasy games, which I can't do if they go belly up.

I, too am a fan of the first Silent Hill movie. I think that Sean Bean should have been the star, since one of the unique things about that first game was that it was a father looking for his child, which you don't see often in genre work. I saw the second movie opening day in the theater and I honestly don't remember a thing about it. I know I didn't care for it, but have a dim recollection that the special effects were pretty good.

I'm still excited any time a new Silent Hill is announced. Maybe it's because for my part the series hasn't had a lot of let downs. I genuinely love the first 3 games. I didn't finish The Room because I got to a perpetual fail state that couldn't be corrected. I skipped Origins and I actually liked Homefront a fair bit. So really in my view Downpour has been the only Downside to the franchise (heh). I don't think any of what PT is will factor into Silent Hills, but from what I hear, Yamaoka is doing music and the Team Silent monster designer is on board. Combine that with the Fox Engine and whatever Kojima and Del Toro add to the mix and I remain cautiously optimistic.

That game probably isn't hitting until 2016 though.

Comics 'n' Life 'n' Such

While Claremont gets a lot of flack for his accents and such, he's my all-time favorite X-Men writer. To defend him on the exposition, you have to understand that this was a mandate of Marvel comics at the time. Since people rarely subscribed and comic book stores were a rarity, writers were told to bring readers up to speed every issue. In addition to catching people up on the plot, it was also mandated that every character be introduced by name in every issue.

My favorite, most hilarious example of this is in the very first Marvel Comics Transformers. There is an amazing 2 page spread introducing all of the Autobots and their special abilities. It reads as badly as you would imagine.

I'm always taking show ideas. You can PM me on the site with bigger ideas, or general questions for the cast. We answer them on air when we get them, but that's a rarity. As far as smaller topics for community show part 3, feel free to send those as well, and I'll be doing another blog post when we're set to record another one. We have shows booked up for the next 4 or so, so it'll be a couple months until we get to do another one. Thanks for the feedback!

I watched the Power Rangers movie about 4 years ago and still had fun with it. I hate, hate, hate the villain and the CG for the zords is TERRIBLE now, but I'm a sucker for the costumes, martial arts action, and Amy Jo Johnson in those shorts.

I'm about 45 minutes into your appearance on Past and Pending, and I think you hold yourself well! I'm going to try and remember to plug it on the next episode, and I may just take you up on the guesting offer.

I'm not saying anyone should hate him. I'm saying I really don't like him and don't want to support him with my money. I think he's incredibly disrespectful to the industry he so badly wanted to be a part of. I think he is a whiny primadonna that took his ball and went home when people started to respond to his purposely trolling comments. I think he's also indicative of that "indie game mentality" that I rail against on NWP. That sense that video games are terrible if they come from a big company and only indie games are where it's at...by copying the game mechanics and art style of 25 years ago.

I'm partial to supernatural horror, so I'm a big fan of (most of) the Paranormal Activity movies, and Sinister is the most recent one to really get under my skin. Written by a friend of our very own John Gholson, to boot!

Um...you should probably get on those Matrix movies. What are you doing watching the second in a trilogy, anyway? :P
