Asura's Wrath Part 3

Posted on 03/01/2014 at 12:13 PM | Filed Under Feature

Man, I kind of feel like we failed now. Asura's Wrath is a cinematic action game (operative word being cinematic) with roots in classic anime tropes. It's not a bad game, but parts of it are bad/frustrating, mainly because CyberConnect2 doubled down on the spectacle and didn't focus much on the direct gameplay. We all enjoyed this game, and I'm a little bummed that for some reason that wasn't communicated in this Backloggers series. Just like the first time I played it, I find myself thinking about it fondly, and wishing there was a sequel in the works.

I was really happy I played this game when it was new. It was a charming little action/platformer. Also surprisingly violent, what with the splitting enemies down the middle and all.

Well, I actually would wear a shirt that says "What if Tidus was a guy?" Tongue Out

DooM 64

Doom 64 was a great version of Doom. It had some of the best Doom levels I've played in the Doom series, and the atmospheric music was far superior to the earlier Doom games.

Doom.

Oh man, if you have time you should totally check out some of the older Bombcast episodes, especially the Game of the Year deliberations from 2009 and 2010. And hopefully you get a chance to check out some of the NWP shows you missed. Episodes 6, 9, and 10 are personal favorites of mine.

Special: All About Bravely Default

Posted on 02/23/2014 at 12:43 PM | Filed Under Feature

Yeah, with Square Enix frontloading the year with basically four Final Fantasy releases (I'm lumping Bravely Default and A Realm Reborn in there), I thought it was high time we did a proper Final Fantasy cast. Because apparently doing an exhaustive series-wide retrospective wasn't enough to get FF talk out of my system.

That's an interesting thought. I know we encourage people to play along with us on Backloggers (that's kind of the whole point), but it might be cool to get a list of what we're going to talk about out there before we record. To be honest we usually don't let each other know what we've been playing until we start the show, unless it's a big game that most or all of us can talk about. I know the episode next week will have more Bravely Default, me ripping into Lightning Returns, and Patrick has Titanfall, Lego Marvel Superheroes, Elder Scrolls Online, and a ton more.

So, I'm going to put a pin in the last part of your blog for a second.

I love podcasts. After EGM was shuttered I found myself running to Rebel FM and 1up Yours to get my fix of the old magazine staff's opinions. Over the years I've added a ton of podcasts to my list, because my old job gave me the opportinuity to listen to them all day long. Sadly, that's no longer the case, because I started a new job and only have my commute to listen to shows, so I had to cut a lot of them. Sadly, I cut the Geekbox. I just can't handle Adam Fitch anymore. I love the rest of the cast, but as a Doctor Who fan that's a season behind I can't listen to a bunch of the episodes because of spoilers.

The Giant Bombcast is my absolute favorite podcast. I'm still reeling from the death of Ryan Davis. The main theme to Pac Man Championship Edition DX came on my ipod last night and I almost cried. That show got me through many many terrible days of work at my old job. While the show continues to be entertaining (the recent episode with Patrick Klepek talking about that EVE Online war was epic), the loss of Ryan is still very huge for me. You should definitely check out some of their Quick Looks on the site, because it's like an extra bit of Giant Bombcasty goodness.

Thank you so much for your kind words about NWP. I'm not sure when you started listening, but I agree with your opinion. Angelo is a relatively new addition to the show, filling the massive shoes of Rob Ottone, who was with Patrick and I back on PixlTalk and helped us form this show. It's taken us a bit to get comfortable together, and we've also been working to improve things on the back end. Angelo got a new mic, and I've been tweaking with the audio levels and learning new editing tricks. We're always looking for show ideas and/or comments, so you can definitely send any my way. Just direct message me. Thanks again, and thanks for listening! (tell your friends)

Episode 39: The Mushy Stuff

Um...wow, Mike. Wow.

You know I love me some Fable 2 and Peter Molyneaux. One of the ideas he espoused before the game came out was being a female adventurer and getting pregnant, but having to carry the baby to term while still fighting and questing. I think that would have been amazing, but unfortunately you just get pregnant and it fades to black and then you're a mom. I know it would have gotten in the way of gameplay, but it would have been pretty awesome to have to deal with being a mother AND and adventurer.

Yeah, I've heard that, too. I don't know what game those other people were playing. Every screen and character is so beautiful and charming. They looked great close up during cutscenes, too.

Editing is something that evolves over time. Go listen to the first episode of NWP and compare it to now. I've become pretty proud of my editing, but those first episodes are rough.
