Retro Game of the Week: Wario Land II

Posted on 04/05/2014 at 08:27 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I disagree.  Wario Land: Shake It, while not as good as Wario Land 2, was still a good game in its own right with beautifully animated hand-drawn graphics.  Plus, Capt. Syrup returned in it.

While most WarioWare games are not as good as the original, I still think they're good for quick and quirky fun.

The Unnecessary Evolution of Mario Party

Mario Party games are fun, but only if there are a lot of people you can play with.  And my number of gamer friends who can still play with me is dwindling.  Plus, all Mario Party games are pretty much the same.  If you've played one, you've played them all.

I agree, Wario Land 2 is probably the best one, even though they're all great.  I enjoy the Wario titles more than most regular Mario games, really. This may be my second favorite Game Boy game (first is Link's Awakening)

Not being able to die was brilliant, and having to figure out when and where to get hit by particular enemies gave the game some clever puzzle elements. I also loved the branching pathways.  PROTIP: At the beginning part of the first stage, DON'T get out of bed when you hear the alarm clock.  I found that path out by accident!

Plus, the game has Captain Syrup and she's awesome.  Nintendo should use her more.

The Unnecessary Evolution of Mario Party

I've played more than one Mario Party game, but I really mostly only played the first, and I think that's all I needed to play.  I have one of the GameCube Mario Party titles, but I only bought it because it was at a charity auction.

So Long, Folks. I'm Going to Work for SEGA Now!

I've never played any of the other ones.  Any characters I would like?

A Plesent Friday Surprise For Old 1UPpers

Very cool.  There are a lot of people I still miss at 1up.  I can't follow them all, though, as that would spread myself thin.  I wish I had more time to do things like that.

There's only one Kinect game that I really liked.  It's called The Gunstringer and it was made by Twisted Pixel.

Taito Legends - Battle Shark, Bubble Bobble, Gladiator

Yeah, Puzzle Bobble is called Bust-A-Move in the US, but I hate that name so I try to call it Puzzle Bobble.  it's on pretty much every system imaginable.

Taito Legends - Battle Shark, Bubble Bobble, Gladiator

Battle Shark didn't seem too memorable on Taito Legends.  I like that you mentioned StarBlazers.  I used to watch that show when I was a kid.  Did you know that in Japan, they just had a StarBlazers remake?

Bubble Bobble is freaking awesome and one of my favorite Taito games.  My brother Jeff and I used to always play it together when he was young.  Great game to play with kids.  I also like the puzzle game Puzzle Bobble.  It's one of my top three puzzle games and even my mom likes to play it.

I remember Gladiator in the arcades, but I didn't like it much.  The big draw with this game, if I remember correctly, is the large character graphics.  They really stood out at the time.

I always get mixed up on which games are on Taito Legends 1 and 2.  But Taito is one of my favorite game companies.  Lots of history in that company.

If you have a DS, you should track down Arkanoid DS, also by Taito.  it's really fun and the music was so good, I imported the soundtrack.  Zuntata, Taito's iin-house band, is awesome.

My Top 10 GBA Games

You have some good choices on your list.  Have you ever played Astro Boy: Omega Factor?  it's an amazing GBA action game, and one of my favorites.
