March of Reviews

The requirements for E3 have gotten completely out of hand. We still haven't applied yet because we're waiting for the uptick in viewership to register and hopefully that gets us a couple passes.

Last year we were just flat out denied for any passes and only got one the year before that. I'm not really sure how many sites out there are really posting the numbers they expect. My guess is that they want more passes for paid attendees (i.e. exhibitors) and as such have snubbed a large portion of the smaller gaming media.

Sadly, I think this has really filtered up to the exhibitors and I don't think E3 has maintained the same presence it once had. These days it seems like all of the big news is released in private press events for a select group. Furthermore, the really big deal stuff at E3 is all demoed privately for the big sites who are "judges." One day I need to write a Rage Quit on the absolute BS of the politics of this industry.

Of course, I don't do this for a living, so it's not like it's a huge deal for me from a monetary standpoint, but a lot of the joy has gotten sucked from being enthusiast press in this day and age.

PSN store gave me $10. What should I buy?

The email I got is just a straight up voucher for 10 free dollars on PSN, but they must be used by 3/25.

I got one yesterday too! Still have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but surely there's something on there. Tonight I should have my PS3 hooked up, so I'll grab the MGR VR missions while they're free and pick something out before the code expires.

DRM SUCKS. F-Zero AX in GX is another reason why

Awesome! I love F-Zero GX and I never got to play AX, so this is actually super exciting. Once I get my game room set back up, this is first on the agenda.

Excellent! I figured that was it. Actually, the site should be doing all sorts of neat stuff now that you have jQuery activated. Most of the dynamic widgets on the site are built using that technology, though there's a fair helping of plain old javascript too.

Episode 80: Wii Unanimous Love

Glad to hear you liked it! We need to get PixlTalk up and running again. Things got real crazy after the Wii U came out with family in town for the holidays and then the whole moving bit. Anyway, now that Chessa is done with school and we're getting close to settled in, we'll probably kick off another episode soon, so stay tuned!

Indie Game: The Movie

Posted on 03/12/2013 at 10:50 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I really enjoyed this movie as well. It was extra great seeing the process behind a couple of games I love (Fez and Super Meat Boy) and seeing someone I have talked to before do their thing (Edmund McMillen).

What I found most interesting was how zen Jonathon Blow was in comparison to the other guys. I also thought the movie humanized Phil Fish, who had gotten a pretty bad rap due to some of his arrogant behaviors and comments. It became apparent to me that the guy has some real self-esteem issues and cares immensely about how people perceive him and his work. It makes me not feel so bad about loving Fez so much.

I also felt pretty bad for these guys - they put it all on the line in a big way and hope that it pays off. They work extremely hard and lead a lifestyle I couldn't possibly imagine to realize their dreams. A lot of respect for these fellows and for the makers of the documentary who did an absolutely amazing job.
