OST So Good! #15: Mario Kart 8

Posted on 02/22/2022 at 08:31 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I love the jazzy, instrumental tunes of Mario Kart 8.  One cool thing I liked is the title screen music, if you let it play long enough, they play an upbeat version of the ORIGINAL title theme from SNES Super Mario Kart!  Every Mario Kart game has good music, even the RC Mario Kart Live game!  If you listen to my first podcast, you'll learn that SNES Super Mario Kart is one of my top five favorite games of all time!

Are you going to see the Uncharted movie?

I loved Twisted Pixel's games back in the 360 days.  I got to review pretty much all of them.  They were semi-local (Austin, TX), so I would meet them every year at PAX and had good contacts with them.  When they used live action video in games like Comic Jumper and LocoCycle, I even recognized some of the places they filmed!  I loved the humor in those games.  Really miss them.

Is the the game with the little wooden "Meeple?"  I think I played the board game version of this a long time ago with friends.

When it comes to racing games, I really just prefer the silly stuff like Mario Kart.  Probably the most 'realistic' racing game I enjoy is Ridge Racer.

Never heard of this one.

BaD #14: Bust-a-Move Again

Posted on 02/19/2022 at 08:23 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble is one of my top three favorite puzzle games of all time, right up there with Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo and plain ol' Tetris.  I think they must've made Bust-A-Move Again to appeal to US audiences, since they removed any traces of Bubble Bobble characters in this one.  Snood did get a release on a handheld console, I believe.  Not sure if it was the GBA or DS.  There's also a bunch of Puzzle Bobble rip-offs on mobile devices.  Puzzle Bobble just had a new game in the series and it went 3-D and you can even use VR with it!  I reviewed it here;

OST So Good! #14: Shovel Knight

I liked the soundtrack to Shovel Knight so much that I bought it on CD at PAX one year. And I only buy game CD soundtracks if I REALLY like the music.  Makes sense that a Mega Man game music composer helped work on this, since the soundtrack definitely has a Mega Man quality to it.

BaD #13: Bonze Adventure

This game kind of reminded me a bit of Adventure Island mixed with Ghosts N Goblins, with a Japanese 'Yokai" theme.  But if I remember correctly, it was one of those 'one hit and you die' kind of games, and I'm not a big fan of those.

OST So Good! #13: Donkey Kong Country- Tropical Freeze

The newer DKC games do have great music, but they are less memorable to me because those games were just too darn hard!  And I'm not bad at DKC games, I don't think.  I beat the first three on SNES anyway.  So I don't know what it is.  I do remember one of the newer games had a boss that was also a mine cart level and I was like, "Yeah no thank you."  But it still amazes me how they were able to pull off the CD quality music on the SNES, especially with tunes like the underwater theme from the first game.  Wow!
