E3 2010 Predictions

The staff sounds off on their hopes and expectations for the show.

Chris M's Predictions

I've been reading news, watching the major press conferences (live if I could help it), and loving the hype, community, and overall circus, as I hear it, that is E3 for years. To be able to finally go is very, very exciting for me. I only know what to expect from what I've read in the past as to the process. As for the news: I have some predictions, but I'm hoping for, and expecting, plenty of surprises. Regardless, E3 is looking to live up to its name.

Microsoft

Microsoft is going to heavily emphasize Natal. That's a definite given (with the help of Cirque de Soleil!). I'm still not sure what to make of it, hence why I'm happy it's going to have such a strong presence at E3. I think it's going to do better than most people expect, but I don't think it's going to take off. Although, if you think about it, I don't see why most people wouldn't go nuts over this, even if they get it more for novelty than gaming. The 360 just doesn't have the image that the Wii has in terms of mass market appeal. Not yet, anyway--perhaps something Microsoft is going to push for, now more than ever.

I do think Nick's comment is interesting: could Microsoft have something more planned by getting Natal out in the open so early at Sunday night's show. I'd be all for some big announcements aside from the Natal premiere.

As for games: say hello to Gears of War 3, Fable III, and Halo: Reach. Definitely going to be big hitters, so expect plenty of focus on these titles.

Nintendo

I'm extremely excited about Zelda. I'll just get that out of the way right now. Possibilities of a different Zelda experience, in whatever form, makes it even more exciting. I also think Pikmin 3 will be talked about, but I don't think much will be shown. Anyway, I have a sinking feeling that Nintendo isn't going to reveal too much more exciting news, with the exception of the 3DS. I think that they could surprise us with both 3DS announcements and a release date for next spring. Other than that, maybe with some more examples of the Wii Vitality Sensor with a small game or a feature of a game. I also wouldn't be surprised at a MotionPlus-Wiimote integration.

I don't think there will be any major Mario announcements, except for maybe a spin-off title; if there are, I doubt it will be more than a teaser. I do want to try Golden Sun DS and Metroid: Other M, as well. As for Wii Party: let's just wait and see.

Any sort of obscure tease as to the future of the Smash Bros. series would be great, to say the least.

Sony

Sony is really in a position where they need to focus on Move. I think they'll have plenty of announcements to deluge us with, but I'll be very surprised if they don't make an extensive push for Move. With this, I think we'll get a hard release date and price on Sony's newest motion control entrant. They're going to need to acknowledge the PSP's performance and especially the run of the PSPgo. Other than that, I'm not too sure what to expect from Sony. As for major game announcements: I'm expecting Gran Turismo 5 is finally going to get some solid release information, and the same goes for The Last Guardian.

I personally want to see and play The Last Guardian, as I'm sure many people do. I'd also like to see more information on Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Gran Turismo 5 footage or gameplay would be great, too. Another Katamari game

would be something to add to my wishlist. As for Final Fantasy, if anything in the Final Fantasy XIII universe is released, it will be either multiplatform

news about Versus XIII or more information on FF XIII Agito. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced another Final Fantasy remake (not VII).

PC

I have no idea what could be said of the PC. I think it's still a very volatile platform for newer games these days, but I think there's some fantastic titles in the pipeline. Other than that, I'm hoping the PC has some progressive news at this E3.

I'm sure Portal 2, in whatever form, will make a splash. I think Half Life 2: Episode 3 is getting a release date. It's time...!

I'm sure there will be plenty of Final Fantasy XIV coverage as well.

All

3D! Because, you know, why not! I'm going to reserve judgment on it; I just don't have the experience with 3D gaming. I'm all ears (and eyes).

Most of these predictions seem pretty safe. Does no one want to predict anything wild? I heard a rumour that Microsoft and Mars Candy Company are teaming up to create a new type of gamer candy called X&M's, which they will be handing out free samples at the show. Soon after, they will be sued by XM Radio for trademark infringement.

I really like the idea of a MMOKatamari Damacy. It needs to happen. You can roll up stuff, become gigantic, then have little Katamari rolling up whatever random stuff is stuck to you. It would be utter chaos and fun.
