The Last Guardian

Oh, Last Guardian. You’re basically on this list as a courtesy, and because even Pandora’s Box contained a glimmer of hope. You could fit into every category in this sneak preview. You’re a heavy hitter in the minds of many a gamer. You’re a new kid on the block, and yet you’ve been in development so long that you feel like an old friend. You’re an underdog, because a lot of us have given up on you. But you, Last Guardian, are most definitely a wild card.

To say that The Last Guardian has had a tortured development cycle is an understatement to the nth degree. The game hasn’t been shown to the public since 2010, and the last time people in the games media saw it was almost a year ago. Sony claims that the game is still in development, even though the trademark on the name lapsed after going three years without a product to sell. This trademark was renewed, but the departure of Team Ico leaders Fumito Ueda and Yoshifusa Hayama does little to inspire confidence. Ueda is still working on the game through a contract with Sony, but that seems to be progressing slowly. Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida commented in a recent interview that he can’t promise that the game will release in 2013.

So let’s enjoy that trailer one more time, shall we?
