Okay - someone sell me on this game. It seems...complicated.
Etrian Odyssey IV: Party Planning Preview
A great party never just happens.
SCRUB PARTY
Landsknecht Fortress
Runemaster Sniper Nightseeker
Creating a few characters of classes I was already comfortable with in order to level up my Sniper wasn’t too exciting, but I did get to add in a Landsknecht who sounded like a pretty drab damage dealer. Going back and starting with these level one characters and almost no cash in the bank was a bit tough. I did a lot of saving and conservative travelling to slowly build their experience with pretty rudimentary weapons until I had enough to get them properly equipped. Yes, I could have transferred weapons from my other party over, but that seemed like even more work than the way I went about it. Plus, roaming a dungeon in a tweed shirt and carrying a tiny dagger sounds like it would really build character.
The Sniper proved to become pretty effective during this grind, dealing some serious damage from the back row - especially when he used certain skills. I was mostly interested in getting him onboard because he has skills that bind enemies’ arms and legs. Those binds worked as I had hoped and I slipped the Sniper over to my primary party as quickly as I could.
PLEASE LET THE SNIPER WORK OUT PARTY
Nightseeker Fortress Dancer
Runemaster Sniper
As it turns out, fighting anything slightly difficult became pretty tough without that heavy healing option in the back row. I had acquired a healing wand that my Runemaster took over and it worked well for healing during battles, but it also wasted opportunities for dealing serious damage with spells. I think ditching the Medic will be a mistake at this point unless I want to really slow my progress down and spend more money on items. Enough of the other classes have some degree of healing available, but what I anticipate leaning on later in the game is sub-classing.
Hopefully, I can do some strange Medic/Sniper combo character that will give me the best of both worlds once the ability to stack another class on a character becomes available. Spending time with the scrub Landsknecht also showed me that he was a bit more interesting than I anticipated. He had some relatively low-cost skills that allowed for elemental attacks that stacked with blows from your other members. I will definitely keep the Landsknecht in mind for a future sub-class.
