Backloggers Anonymous Alundra Part 2

Respect and spoilers

You know who deserves respect? Anybody who finishes this game. Seriously. While we generally came away from Alundra with really positive feedback, some of those puzzles were either frustratingly difficult to the point of seeming almost unfair, or just trite and boring. Untangling word puzzles to talk to dead saints in a particular order isn't really anybody's idea of a good time, neither are some of those pillar-pushing puzzles. But hey, if you pulled it off and wanted to hear what we thought (or even if you gave up), click on the play button and find out.

St Brown

For our next show, we're going to be tackling our first really huge game: Final Fantasy X. Yeah, I know I said we won't do AAA games, but considering the recent re-release and the fact that there's actually quite a few of us (myself included) that haven't played the game, I decided to make an exception. It also sounds like the game isn't exactly a flawless gem (that voice acting.... ugh....), which always makes for some great discussion. Hopefully you're all on board for that.

Well, since Alundra is finished, let us know what you thought in the comments. Even if I don't always reply, I do read over every comment on this show, and we love hearing your thoughts. You can also message me using the site's system if you want. I'm always open to ideas, suggestions, and game recommendations. Enjoy!

Well done, gents! I am very glad that I played this game for a few hours and put it down.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go hang myself. Or listen to The Cure. Or both.

Julian's a hater

It's really not that bad, its just has the occasional bump, those bumps are pretty... dramatic though :D

To clarify, I need to hang myself because that story sounds like a downer.

I don't remember why I didn't like Alundra. I just didn't. I dimly recall not liking the graphics, but I really enjoyed Dark Savior on the Saturn so I can't say that the platforming turned me off. I'd give it a go, but I just don't have it in me to put 40 hours into a game that never impressed me.

Ah yeah, it really is, but the consequences of the game make it really feel like what's happening matters. That's important. I mean, waging war with a nearly omnipotent demon has consequences man.

Hey, I liked that saints puzzle! But I'm one of those weird people that love logic puzzles.

Ah, well someone on the design team probably liked it too. I just think logic puzzles like that are better suited to games like 999 than more action oriented titles. They slow the game down.

Also Saint Brown. Come on now. How I made it through the cast without making a Saint Brown joke is beyond me.

I like games that make me use my head, so it's the puzzles that keep me playing.

It really is a tough one to finish. I have started this game twice and have yet to finish it. But I know I will one day because what kept me playing was the dark story, beautiful sprite graphics, and impressive music score that created a game dripping with atmospere. A lot of people tried to label it a Zelda clone, but what action rpg isn't. I would think with the resurgence in popularity of really tough games (Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden) that it would be a badge of honor to take Alundra on and finish it.

The difficulty in games like Dark Souls feels more honest than it does in Alundra. Alundra has some fantastically difficult puzzles for sure, but it also have some that make you want to write angry letters to the dev. It's certianly worth playing I think. I found finishing it to be extremely satisfying.

I'm about halfway through the podcast.  Good job on interlacing the music throughout the episode Angelo.  Especially the part were we talked about the music in Meia's dream.

I want to listen to this podcast, but I also want to finish the game first.  I just finished Torla Mountain.  It would have been nice to know that Nava's Charm makes that dungeon a billion times easier and that all I had to do was equip it.

You're pretty close to the end then. Yeah, the game eventually tells you how to get that charm WAY after it's seriously useful. It does come in handy a time or two in the final dungeon though.

Everyone always said Alundra was the PlayStation's Zelda, so I always assumed the story would be similar too. You know, there and dramatic but really not that important. But the story in Alundra sounds really cool. If I ever do play it myself, the story will be the main reason.

But FFX...man, I don't know. I do want to play it but I don't really want to go out and buy it right now Undecided The nice thing about some of the games you picked last year—specifically Mirror's Edge and El Shaddai—is that I actually did have them backlogged. So I'll probably sit out FFX, though I'll be there for the first podcast at least.

I liked when you did that poll to determine the next game. I remember Alan Wake was on that list...which I still haven't played my copy of lol.

I'm thinking of doing Alan Wake for our Halloween game this year, but I can't promise anything at this point. I've been DYING to play that game.

Yeah picking FF X was a tough call for that exact reason. I was surprised, though, at how many people backlogged it, so I'm gonna do it anyway, but I'll probably avoid the FF Franchise in the future even if they do release FF XII HD.

Dang it, man, I actually have a copy of FFXII Tongue Out

ok well maybe we'll do XII if that HD re-release happens...

The saints puzzle didn't bother me about Alundra. The controls were wonky as hell, though, and that was tough given that I was used to the more precise controls in Zelda. Also, I think platforming has no place in non-platforming games. That is all.

I bet if they use the same physics in a 2d platformer it would be fine. I really think it's an issue with perspective. The game just wasn't capable of giving the player the tools they needed to make the platforming a success.

That being said, I still really liked this game, it just has issues.

i feel bad for Alundra at the end of the final movie.  He does seem haunted by the events of the game...
