Nerds Without Pants Episode 85: Our Souls are Doomed

And so is this podcast!

Hey folks! Welcome to another technical issue-laded episode of Nerds Without Pants. Apoligies, but once again the internet has conspired against us, and this episode is not up to our normal standard of quality. Hopefully you stick around though, because there is some good stuff in this episode!

PixlBit site director Nick joins us this week to talk about a thing that unfortunately got lost to the hungry gods of Skype. Patrick actually finished an RPG instead of "Patricking" it. Julian is getting his ass kicked by Doom on a regular basis, while Nick is mastering Dark Souls 3. Angelo went down a weird and wacky YouTube rabbit hole that somehow involves Blue Stinger and Hybrid Heaven. Julian has finally experience the Fast and the Furious, and there may be multiple Statham Sightings (TM) in your future.

We are introducing a new feature to Nerds Without Pants on our next show: Chrono Crossing. Let us know your favorite game that was released in 2015, and we will read your selections on this new interactive section of NWP. Please look forward to it!

It was great to hear Nick back on, but it was too bad the conversations at the end were lost; I'm interested in hearing more about PixlCross' development. I'm also interested in hearing more about Patrick's game design studies and what his classes are like so far.

I haven't blogged or commented in a little bit but I come bearing good news. I was accepted and enrolled into DigiPen for this fall! I'm finally transferring from my community college and I got into my top choice school that I had my sights on this whole time. Right now I'm sorting out financial aid and student housing for when I move from Colorado to Washington state when classes start.

I'll be in their bachelor of science in computer science program that has a focus on real-time interactive simulation. Making games with a focus on building engines from scratch including graphics engines in 2D and 3D, real-time rendering, creating the physics, AI, networks, and gameplay. DigiPen also has a fine arts program, an audio engineering program, music production, another program specifically for game design students that isn't science intensive like mine is, and another program for animation. All the students from these different backgrounds can work together to make games, it should be really interesting.

I really wish somebody would port DOOM to the Vita.  It worked on the GBA, it should definitely work on the Vita.

Favorite game of 2015.  The one that comes to mind immediately is Bloodborne...  granted I have been thinking about that game a lot over the past month.

Did I hear a clip of a song about Sonic describing all the gross things Hedgehogs do? Ha ha! That was awesome.

Doom was one of my first PC gaming experiences. I was a Apple guy, but I did play some Zork on a IBM PC once before that, now I think of it.

I remember the music in Doom II scared the heck out of me, especially when there were Hell Knights hidding in monster closets. I was just using that term "monster closets" the other day with Ratchet & Clank. Every time something appeared behind me, I complained of gorram monster closets. Darn those things.

I haven't played every 2015 I wanted to (MGS 5, for example) but the one that was a surprise was Dying Light. I'm not a fan of zombies in general and I usually don't play survival horror games yet the game mechanics - weapons handling, item managment and especially parkour - was so well-implemented that I found myself devoting around 64-65 hours on this monster. The look of the city was also gorgeous and the various zombies provided different levels of challenge. And they could also be scary as hell: outrunning or manuvering virals at night made for some intense, scary gaming moments. I made a few friends in co-op mode and co-op was so much fun. The most fun in co-op aside from Rocket League.
