The Skyrim Primer

A beginners guide to the realm of Skyrim.

Get to Know the Locals

What would a fantasy game be without a variety of different races to war with each other?  The Elder Scrolls series is no stranger to multiple races and Skyrim offers a veritable smorgasbord of playable races to choose from.

Each race has its own set of skill bonuses, special abilities and other pros and cons that separates it from the others.  While we do not know what these mechanical differences are at this time, we do know what races will be available.

Humans

Like in most games, Humans are the default race and it is quite likely that most gamers will use one as their avatar.  Refreshingly, there is still some variety present, as you can choose to be a Nord, native to Skyrim; a Breton, native to High Rock; an Imperial, native to Cyrodiil; or a Redguard, native to Hammerfell.

Elves

Of course there are elves; I don’t think you could call this a western fantasy RPG if there weren’t some kind of elfin or elf-like race in it.  Like the humans, elves come in a variety of flavors for you to choose from, all with their own unique abilities.  There are the Bosmer, Wood Elves of Valenwood; Dumer, Dark Elves of Morrowind; and the Altmer, High Elves of the Summerset Isles.

Argonian

The reptilian Argonians call the Black Marsh home.  They have adapted well to survive the treacherous and uninviting environment of their homeland and have become experts of guerrilla warfare as a result.  They also possess natural immunities to disease and poison and can breathe underwater.

Khajiit

The Khajiit are a cat-like race that hails from the province of Elsweyr.  Like the felines they’re based on, the Khajiit are quick and agile, and will likely be best suited for close combat that takes advantage of their natural weapons.

Excellent article. I pre-ordered Skyrim 2 weeks ago because of reviews and the subject. This is my first venture into Elder Scrolls and very beneficial for an introduction that is "assumed" knowledge by most gamers. I'm even more psyched about the release Friday!!!

Dragons are the main reason this game is hyped?

No, sorry but most probably don't even care about the dragons.

Dragons were definitely one of the most promoted things at E3, I'm not saying that's all there is, but I think they're probably the most featured new elements of the Elder Scrolls games.
