Excellent article. I pre-ordered Skyrim 2 weeks ago because of reviews and the subject. This is my first venture into Elder Scrolls and very beneficial for an introduction that is "assumed" knowledge by most gamers. I'm even more psyched about the release Friday!!!
The Skyrim Primer
A beginners guide to the realm of Skyrim.
Join the Club
The ability to join different organizations, guilds or factions has been a common feature since it made its debut in the second entry in the Elder Scrolls series, Daggerfall. Joining these organizations or factions has always been optional, but staying completely neutral is a sure way of diluting the overall experience since certain quests and plot points are only available through participation.
Of the many possible organizations that could find their way into Skyrim, six have been confirmed at this time. There are The Companions, a warrior faction; The College of Winterhold, a mage faction; the Thieves’ Guild, a faction of…well, thieves; The Dark Brotherhood, an assassins’ guild of sorts; The Storm Cloaks, a rebel organization; and the Riverwood Warrior Clan.
Choosing an organization can be a tricky thing, as participation in one faction may preclude your admission into another, so it is important not to leap at every invitation you get. Once you’ve settled into your character it’s suggested that you choose those organizations that make the most sense for your character or will provide maximum entertainment –and remember, there isn’t anything keeping you from playing through again.
