Microsoft Requiring Kinect Support for all Dashboard Apps.

Any new content added to the 360 dash will need to support swipe.

We’re just a couple days removed from the new Xbox 360 dashboard update, and it hasn’t exactly been a smooth transition. After a slight delay, the update had a few problems, including breaking some consoles. We’ve also learned that the new dashboard isn’t much of a fan of Xbox Live Indie Games. And now, the Kinect support that has been cited as a highlight of the update is going to be something that all developers will need to include in their apps moving forward.

Now, that might be something to stoke the ire of gamers right off the bat. Players have already expressed their displeasure at the inclusion of Kinect support for big games like Halo Anniversary and Mass Effect 3. But the operative word of this story is “app”, as in the additional items added to the 360 dashboard like Netflix and ESPN. As new services get announced, Microsoft will require them to include gesture or voice navigation. So don’t worry, gamers: this isn’t the announcement that every game needs to have Kinect functionality. But hey, navigating menus with your hand might come in…handy.

Too many hands.
