Japanese Vita Games Make Use of Online Pass

Could the Online Pass be coming to handhelds in North America?

The PlayStation Vita was recently released in Japan with a North American and European launch coming this February.  Since the Japanese launch, the internet has been abuzz with information regarding the hardware and software as it has been released in Japan.  While most of the buzz pertains to information that was already well known, Destructoid discovered something not previously publicized about Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational – that the game requires an online pass to play online.

After polishing off the single-player mode in Minna no Golf 6 (The Japanese title for the game), Destructoid staffer Dale North moved to online play only to have the game ask him to enter his “Online Play Ticket.”

The game provided a link to the PlayStation Store where a ticket could be purchased for 900 yen, approximately $11.50 at the current conversion rate.  A physical copy of the game comes with the code printed on the manual, but the cheaper digital copies of the game require the player to purchase the code separately.

The price of the digital download and code equates to the purchase price of the physical copy – essentially giving players the option to forgo the online experience if they are only interested in single-player.

PixlBit has reached out to Sony for comment and to confirm if this “Online Play Ticket” will also be utilized in the North American and European releases of the game.

Damn, but I don't care about hot shots golf. I'm still pretty disappointed that uncharted golden abyss doesn't have multiplayer!
