September 2009 NPDs Initial Report

Sales are up overall as PlayStation 3 leads the consoles for the first time since its launch and Halo 3: ODST sells 1.5 million in less than two weeks.

During the period of August 30 to October 3, the DS lead all systems with just over 500,000 units and Halo 3: ODST sold over a million more than the second game on the list, Wii Sports Resort.

The most shocking thing about this month's NPDs is the resurgence of the PlayStation 3, which obviously benefited from the price drop to $299 and the release of the new and improved Slim model. Sony's console sold just shy of 500,000 units, more than doubling their total from August 2009.

The Wii, which also featured a price drop during this period albeit later on, sold a respectable 462,000, which was roughly 30,000 units less than the PS3.

The Xbox 360 still saw an increase although it was very clearly in third place this month with about 350,000 units sold. It also saw a price drop, but it didn't seem to have the same effect as PlayStation 3's drop as it appeared to be more of a response to Sony.

The PSP and the PlayStation 2 saw minimal increases from August 2009, and it appears that launch day sales of the PSPgo, which released at the tail end of the report on October 1, weren't astronomical.

See below for the full system sales charts:

Nintendo DS 524.2K

PlayStation 3 491.8K

Wii 462.8K

Xbox 360 352.6K

PSP 190.4K

PlayStation 2 146.0K

The top 10 best-selling games was bolstered by Halo 3: ODST, which sold 1.5 million units. The game was released on September 22 and apparently has sold over 2.5 million units so far.

Nintendo's summer hit Wii Sports Resort cooled off from August, but still slots into the number two spot with a little bit over 442,000 units sold. Wii Sports Resort is closing in on 2 million units sold since its late July release. Nintendo also owns the fourth spot on the list with Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, which sold a respectable 258,000 after a mid-September release.

Madden NFL 10 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 charted third and sixth respectively and is unshockingly down after its first month. Still, Madden NFL 10 is no doubt well past 2 million units overall.

The Beatles: Rock Band chalked up 250,000 and 200,000 for Xbox 360 and Wii in the fifth and tenth spots respectively. That's including the $250 bundled version of the game. Guitar Hero 5 charted at ninth with the Xbox 360 version with just a little bit more than the Wii version of Beatles. Guitar Hero 5 released a week earlier than The Beatles: Rock Band.

Comic properties rounded out the top 10 with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 in the seventh spot and Batman: Arkham Asylum for PlayStation 3 hanging on with a minimal decrease from its August launch in the eighth spot. Curiously the Xbox 360 version, which was ahead of the PS3 version last month, didn't chart. Keep in mind the PS3 version has exclusive downloadable content featuring the Joker. Also, the game is really good.

See below for the list of the top 10 selling games of September 2009.

HALO 3: ODST (360; Sep-09) 1.52M

WII SPORTS RESORT W/ WII MOTION PLUS (WII; Jul-09) 442.9K

THE BEATLES:ROCK BAND* (WII; Sep-09) 208.6K

(*includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

Looking at the top 10, EA leads the charge with four releases (Madden and The Beatles), Nintendo and Activision both have two games in the top 10, and Microsoft and Eidos have the other two games.

It's worth noting that Nintendo's long-standing top 10 mainstays Wii Play, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii have dropped off the list, but knowing Nintendo, they'll be back on the list after they've been out for four years. Also, Wii Fit Plus launched the day after this report ended.

Well this seals the deal, one of Sony's biggest hurdles was simply the price of their machine... like everyone said. I'm glad that they are gaining a bit of marketshare, it should help put some pressure on Microsoft, and even Nintendo.

Sorry, Nick, but I disagree. Sony releases a new model, chops $100 off the price and the PS3 still only manages to outsell the Wii by 30,000 units? Those aren't exactly fantastic numbers.

I predict the Wii will outsell the PS3 in October--in part thanks to the recent Wii price drop--and continue to beat the PS3 throughout the holiday season.

Another thing to note is that there are only two PS3 games on the top 10 list (#6 and #8).

They might be selling systems, but they don't have a killer app.
