Spiderweb Software 20th Anniversary Interview with Jeff Vogel

In business for almost twenty years, Spiderweb Software is still going strong. In honor of this milestone, they have answered some of our questions about game development, and what it's like to be indie.

With over two decades of experience making games and a record of being independent before indie games were a trend in the gaming world, Spiderweb Software is the hardcore for the hardcore.  Makers of such classic series as Geneforge, Avernum, and now Avadon, the company focuses on old school RPG experiences that most publishers and developers have abandoned..  While they primarily focus on the PC and Mac platforms, they recently experimented with mobile development, releasing Avadon and Avernum to iOS and Android with stunning success.  It seems classic games are classic no matter what system they’re played on.

Scourge: Outbreak Review

Generic third person shooter is generic.

Scourge: Outbreak is the latest shooter title to find its way on Xbox Live Arcade, developed by Tragnarion Games and published by UFO Interactive. It’s what you’d expect in a third-person cover shooter – except lacking any semblance of control, visual style, and polish.

Papo & Yo Review

Papo & Yo isn't just a game -- it's interactive poetry.

Papo & Yo is not a AAA release.  There is no bloated budget here, or tacked-on multiplayer, or DLC to be had.  Likewise, the game isn’t as polished as most big budget releases. But what it does have – what so few AAA titles have – is heart.  This game was forged with a soul.

Time and Eternity Review

A tale of princesses and pervs, eternally retold.

In the last couple of years I’ve had to realize that I’m getting older, and as people get older their tastes gradually change. Time and Eternity is a Japanese-developed RPG that I likely would have loved when I was younger. In fact, I kind of did, as it has a lot of elements that remind me of the PlayStation 1 game Thousand Arms. With its emphasis on hand-drawn graphics and heavily anime inspired themes, Time and Eternity will likely appeal to a lot of people. It just may be that I’m no longer one of them.

Fireburst Review

Burned out on Burnout? Tired of Twisted Metal? Maybe this budget combat racer will re-ignite your flame.

When I was a kid I had a collection of toy cars like most other young boys. The more common cars would populate the cities and towns that I would dig out of the dirt. The fancier cars I’d use for a more exciting fate, launching them off cardboard ramps and watching them sail as far and high as they could go. One thing would have made this activity more awesome; setting them on fire.  Letting me live out this childhood dream is what Fireburst—developed by indiePub and exDream for BigBen Interactive—sets out to accomplish. It’s an offroad combat racing game where fire fuels your speed and is the basis of the combat system.

Element4l Review

In a game with no enemies, physics and logic are the driving forces in Element4l.

Element4l is an innovative platformer that focuses on how well you know your physics, as well as your ability to adapt. You have control of the four elements, and the only enemy is your own environment. The four elements are bound together, and are on a quest to shape life. This is no ordinary platform game—you must use logic, reasoning, and physics to traverse through the levels. This is an experimental title that’s wrapped in a wonderful soundtrack, composed by MindTree. This game challenges you to rearrange your reflexes, and figure out which element is best suited to each obstacle.

The Starship Damrey Review

Poor puzzles and clunky controls can't keep the Damrey down.

Is it possible to simultaneously love and hate a game? The Starship Damrey certainly makes a compelling case for such a sentiment. On one hand, it borrows many of the less desirable traits of classic PC adventure games, but on the other, it neatly melds an excellent sense of atmosphere and humor to keep you consistently interested. Despite the combination of a complete lack of cerebral puzzles and clunky controls, there’s something intrinsically alluring about this unabashedly short game.

Rage Quit: Nintendo Keeps Tripping Over Their Own Feet

Jesse isn't really mad at Nintendo, he's just disappointed.

At PixlBit we pride ourselves on reporting news and reviewing games with as little bias as humanly possible.  That being said, there are times when we don’t want to sit all quiet and polite and instead rage into the vastness that is the internet. In this installment, Jesse rages against Nintendo's self destructive death grip on IP image control.
