Always Online Games and the Subject of Reviews

An editor-in-chief's conundrum thanks to Sim City's rampant issues.

Reviewing games isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. Boiling down exactly how you feel about an experience while providing an objective assessment of the game’s components is a delicate balancing act. With the introduction of always-online games, specifically Sim City, this fragile process has been put to the test. As editor-in-chief of this website, I have to consider how this new component of gaming is factored into our review policies and make a call about how the game’s score is affected.

MIA - Streets of Rage

No, seriously-- where are you, Yuzo Koshiro?

People complain about the plethora of Modern Warfare first person shooters these days, but those same people forget that every few years there’s some genre that dominates the gaming landscape. We’ve gone through the survival horror phase, the RPG obsession, the fighting game craze, and of course the beat ‘em up era. During that time, one of the most popular and legendary brawlers was the Streets of Rage series. It’s been nearly 20 years since Sega’s personal head crackers had a new adventure, so it’s time to dust off this franchise and resurrect it.

PB & Jason Issue 118: SimFantaCity

Hidden gems in game code, SimCity rants, and Final Fantasy Fixes abound in this week's PB & Jason.

You may have heard the news that F-Zero AX was discovered inside F-Zero GX. That news inspired a brief bit of talk about other places where things were hidden pretty deep inside a few games from the past, mostly on the N64. Naturally, SimCity took up a lot of time, too, and Issue 118 closes with some of Julian's Final Fantasy piece. Be sure to listen to the beginning to catch a few more details about the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Community week! Click through for listening and download links!

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Preview

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!

After such a long and torturous wait, Assassins Creed fans finally get to walk the plank again. Director Ashraf Ishmael announced a new location and setting for the seminal franchise in an interview on March 4th, 2013. To be released on November 1 of this year for Ps3, Xbox 360, WiiU, PC, in addition to next generation consoles Ps4 and Xbox 720, Black Flag will be set in the 18th century Caribbean. This age of piracy should prove an interesting shift in the format laid by Assassin’s Creed 2’s trilogy: Assassin’s Creed 4 will release after just one iteration to the series’ third installment.

Picdun 2: Witch's Curse Review

The pixelated cartoon creating, dungeon crawling, soft core porno you should not play.

Can we talk about women?  They’re a wonderful part of our society; in fact they make up just about half of it.  With that many of them around, they’re able to have a huge impact by being mothers, scientists, lawyers, caretakers, nurses, teachers, doctors, police officers, and will even be fighting on the front lines of the U.S. military.  Yet, the makers of Picdun 2 think it’s just fine to stick ridiculously sexualized females into their stupid game to rake in a few bucks and set the entire gender back a few steps in the process.

Five Fixes For Final Fantasy

We give Square Enix some friendly tips for keeping the Fantasy alive.

When Jesse Miller, our resident features guru, asked if I would be interested in doing a Final Fantasy retrospective for the series’ 25th anniversary last year my answer was a resounding “yes!” In the months that followed, I poured all of my love and dedication into a five part series detailing the 14 core Final Fantasy games. It was a labor of love for me; no series of games has been more influential or important to me as a gamer. I’m a staunch defender of these games, even when they go into weird territory like iOS time-wasters. That doesn’t mean that I’m blind to the fact that the series isn’t what it once was, however. As excited as I am for the future of Final Fantasy, I think that the fine folks over at Square Enix need to take a good long look at where the series stands. To that end, I have 5 things that I think could help immensely as we move forward into the next generation.

PB & Jason Issue 117: Dead Space City 13

EA has made quite a few headlines this past week, but none of them are all that positive.

That's right, EA gets a lot of attention in this week's PB & Jason. Why? Well, for starters, SimCity has always-on DRM that's preventing a lot of people from playing the game. Beyond that, rumors of an unsuccessful Dead Space 3 & the cancellation of a Dead Space 4 has drawn ire, whether these rumors are true or not! On top of all this, we've got a couple user blogs focused, some discussion on in-game promotions of some video game media outlets, a special mention of Epic Mickey for some of my favorite listeners, Japanese eShop rules, and a lot of talk about the upcoming Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate community event. PB & Jason is recorded in front of a live studio audience every Wednesday, weather permitting. Click through for listening and download links!
