Does Tryst find a way to liven up the slowly changing real-time strategy genre?
Having purposely kept away from real-time strategy games after an unhealthy period with Age of Empires II over a decade ago, I was unsure what crazy changes had taken place in the genre. What insane new systems had evolved and how would I cope with them? If Tryst is any indication, not too much has changed in all that time, though Tryst tries really hard to inject some new ideas. Even adding on a few good-intention bonus points, Tryst is still a bland sci-fi entry in a genre that could really use some juicing up.

Don't talk, don't text, or we'll take your ass out.
Welcome to NWP at the Movies! This week, the pantsless ones are joined by film critic, actor, artist, and all around good dude, John Gholson. Movies are the topic of the day, but as always we begin with what we’ve been playing and listener mail. This week, we talk about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Patrick’s intro to iOS games, XCOM, and Julian’s existential gaming crisis.
Remember that cheaply made Big Daddy figure? Ken Levine is gonna do right by you this time.
There are some rabid game collectors out there, and Ken Levine and his team over at Irrational Games are banking on that fact with two impressive special editions of BioShock Infinite. The Premium Edition comes with a staggering amount of swag, while the pricier Ultimate Songbird Edition includes a large and very detailed statue. If your inner Gollum is starting to mutter “precious” read on for all the juicy collector details.
More than a cookie cutter.
When Sony announced Playstation All Stars, fans of the developer and its long list of exclusive characters let out rounds of applause. Unfortunately, that applause was followed by a mildly depressed sigh of remorse for a game that looked to steal major portions of the Super Smash Brothers battle system. Luckily, players who have been able to get their hands on the beta of Battle Royale have come away with relief all over their faces.
The road to hell is paved with beautiful 2D sprites.
As someone who cut his teeth on Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, and Sonic the Hedgehog, I have a fondness for the 8- and 16-bit sprite art classic style, but I also want to see games that evolve the 2D platformer and bring it into the 21st century. I often ask myself how things would be if the games industry never moved on to polygons but instead kept refining their sprites for 25 years. What would that game look like? Thanks to Arkedo and their new game Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit I have my answer, and that answer would be “pretty damn sweet.”
The menu system is about as tough as saying the name of this game correctly.
When given the opportunity to play a new game by NIS Software, the role playing game player has to jump at the opportunity. With such inventive, intellectual properties in the genre, it would be difficult to see a lackluster effort coming from the creators of the Disgaea series. But, I'm sorry to say, Legasista happens to lack lust. Compared to the flagship franchises from NIS, it has a poorly paced storyline and a dearth of new gameplay ideas.
Xbox Live Gold just isn't worth the official $60 price tag.
Over the last few years, Microsoft has touted the increasing number of features introduced to Xbox Live Gold. Unfortunately, most of these features come at a price. Literally. Many of the newer Xbox Live Gold features, like Hulu Plus, Verizon FiOS, and Amazon Prime, as well as several older features, require outside subscriptions to other services. At the same time, Microsoft has pointed to the increase in features as a reason to raise the subscription price of Xbox Live Gold from $50 to $60. Much of this week's PB & Jason is on this issue. The rest? Pokémon Black and White 2, Borderlands 2, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC. Click through for the download and streaming links!
