Element4l Review

In a game with no enemies, physics and logic are the driving forces in Element4l.

Element4l is an innovative platformer that focuses on how well you know your physics, as well as your ability to adapt. You have control of the four elements, and the only enemy is your own environment. The four elements are bound together, and are on a quest to shape life. This is no ordinary platform game—you must use logic, reasoning, and physics to traverse through the levels. This is an experimental title that’s wrapped in a wonderful soundtrack, composed by MindTree. This game challenges you to rearrange your reflexes, and figure out which element is best suited to each obstacle.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days Review

Dark Days Now, Darker Days Ahead.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead surprised many last year, including myself, by telling one of the most memorable stories in gaming. By pairing tense scenarios with incredible characters, the episodic game caught wildfire and became a smash success, winning multiple games of the year accolades.  To no surprise, the success of season one means that a season two is inevitable, but in the meantime, Telltale decided to tease us with a DLC that gives us insight on the future of the series.

Indie PC Gaming for the Console Connoisseur

Indie gaming on the PC is easier than you might think. Here's an introduction to getting started, and some games you might enjoy.

People are always saying to me that they can’t game on their PC because it’s not powerful enough, or it doesn’t have this, or it doesn’t have that. Well, I’m here to tell you that might not be true.  While playing AAA games and other major releases may require hardcore gaming rigs, there are a lot of lower budget indie games available that are cheap and easily playable on the most basic of systems.

Thinking Positively About E3

The power of hope.

E3 is on the horizon, and as usual, we are buzzing. This year in particular should be huge. With two brand new consoles on the way and the promise of rescue titles for the Wii U, there’s a lot to be excited about. That said, history proves that things could easily go awry. Despite this, part of what makes E3 so great is the hope that comes along with speculation leading up to the show. I for one am pretty optimistic for this E3. Here are some of my hopes for E3 2013:

Fighting Fundamentals with JD - Learning the Basics

Blocking, BnB’s and More.

You’ve got your game and you’ve got your character, so the next step is potentially one of the most difficult – learning the basics. At this point, assuming you’ve fiddled around with the game, and at least have a handle on the game’s systems, there is still a lot to learn in terms of playing the game properly. Learning the basics at times makes people feel like they don’t know how to play the game at all. It can be frustrating, but the payoff is well worth it, because not only will it you progress in your game of choice, but it will improve your success rate with many other fighting games.

Capcom Readies Dungeons & Dragons for PSN & XBLA

This is a natural 20 of arcade goodness.

Former arcade rats and fans of old school beat ‘em ups have something special to look forward to in the near future. Capcom is slated to unveil ports of their Dungeons & Dragons arcade games for PSN and XBLA at the upcoming PAX East. The two side scrollers were somewhat of a rarity in arcades, most likely due to the immense popularity of the fighting game genre, leading to arcades doubling down on those types of games at the expense of others. Now, though, players who missed out will finally have a chance to play these lost gems.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Review

Game Over Man!

Unlike most reviewers, I feel like I had a unique perspective going into Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines. My fandom of the series only reaches back a few months, when friends recommended that I check out Alien and Aliens. While both movies were great, I didn’t really have the grasp on the series like most that grew up with the franchise. Also unlike most that went into this game, I didn’t have the chance to play it until after the backlash. Reports of the game being horrendous can be found everywhere, and while I agree to an extent, I feel that the majority of this game’s lackluster reception is due to the lofty expectations of diehard Aliens fans. However, nothing can stop Alien’s Colonial Marines from being a generic shooting experience that fell way below the standards of a great game.

Nerds Without Pants Episode 17: The All-Japan Pro Podcast

Sayonara, Rob-san!

Welcome to another edition of Nerds Without Pants! No, this show isn't about an epic wrestling match between Antonio Inoki and Great Baba. This time, we revisit a topic that we talked about when we were still the Tri-Force crew on PixlTalk: Japanese games. Instead of rehashing material we take advantage of the fact that we’re nearing the end of the console cycle and grade major Japanese developers on their performance. Before that, we talk about what games we’ve been playing.

Leaving the Console Behind

The choice between console and PC has never been so clear.

It all starts with a box.  It’s shiny, and it’s white, and it’s metal.  It’s also empty, but it won’t always be this way.
