PixlBit's 2013 Sneak Preview: The Heavy Hitters

We take a look at three of the biggest games heading your way this year.

2012 was kind of an amazing year for video games. We had the launch of two new pieces of hardware in the form of the PS Vita and the Wii U. We had amazing games that seemingly came out of nowhere such as XCOM: Enemy Territory, Dishonored, and Far Cry 3. We also saw growth in the digital download realm, with games like Journey and The Walking Dead in the running for many game of the year lists. With all of that said, 2013 is poised to be one of the biggest years in video game history. As the resident previews guy for PixlBit, I wanted to highlight a few of the more notable games in the pipeline for the coming year. So let's kick things off right with a few of the heavy hitters this year.

Dishonored Review

Cynicism is silently assassinated and fed to an overwhelming swarm of rats.

Something is telling me that I need to unleash my inner cynic and find ways to trash and nitpick Dishonored after it received so much hype.  I tried my best to find things that were poorly done or off-putting.  All that effort was a waste because everything I found wrong with the game was so minor and unimportant that it made realize that I don’t think I’d change a single thing. Dishonored is one of the rare instances where all of the pre-release excitement and anticipation is completely justified and I’m happy to get to pour on additional praise.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Review

Bah-weep-graagnah-weep ninny-bong!

Everybody has that one especially cherished thing that defines their childhood. The Transformers fills that role for me, and sitting in a small movie theater in 1986 watching my hero Optimus Prime die before my eyes was a traumatic event. I’ve followed these Robots in Disguise through various cartoons, comics, and movies over the years, and I’m very protective of how they’re represented. High Moon Studios clearly respects this property as much as I do, which they proved with 2010’s Transformers: War for Cybertron. While I enjoyed that game quite a bit it was by no means perfect, and now High Moon is back with Fall of Cybertron, a game that tries to address the issues of the original. It’s a relief to see Cybertron have more variety in its design, and the problem of scouring the area for ammo in the heat of battle is no longer present, but these ‘bots need to let Wheeljack tinker with them just a little bit more.

The DNA of Dishonored

Five games/series that reflect the heritage and influences of Dishonored

Dishonored is not a completely original work unto itself, but neither is it the latest numbered sequel in an epic franchise. It is an original IP, but it is not without lineage and influence. In a rare show of transparency, its creators, most notably Harvey Smith and Raphael Colontonio, have been extremely up front in citing their resources. From former projects to hot IPs, they’ve mentioned at least half a dozen games that they say have a lot in common with their upcoming release Dishonored, and we’ve found a few more that we think capture essential pieces of what makes Arkane Studios' upcoming release so interesting.
