Always Online Games and the Subject of Reviews

An editor-in-chief's conundrum thanks to Sim City's rampant issues.

Reviewing games isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. Boiling down exactly how you feel about an experience while providing an objective assessment of the game’s components is a delicate balancing act. With the introduction of always-online games, specifically Sim City, this fragile process has been put to the test. As editor-in-chief of this website, I have to consider how this new component of gaming is factored into our review policies and make a call about how the game’s score is affected.

Push Start to Continue Episode 6: New Hair Edition

You see this haircut?!?

Holy crap! This has to be PStC’s most random episode yet!  We start off with some talk on Tomb Raider, Red Dead Assassins (or Assassins Creed 4), and Monday Night Combat – Segue into some Ninja Turtles talk – get serious with some talk on games in/as education – and then finish it off with some weird Sims social experimentation.

Nerds Without Pants Episode 16: The Romantic Babies

Be thankful that I didn't delve deep into my cheesy love song collection for this episode.

Hey folks, Julian here. I hope you had a great Valentine's Day (or Single Awareness Day if you're like the Pantsless Ones). I wanted to do something special for this episode, but my original idea was love stories in video games. Yawn. Instead, I asked Patrick to come up with an off the wall and eclectic idea, in the way that Patrick does. He did not disappoint, and it's a shame that Rob wasn't able to join us because of BLIZZARD 2013!!!

Funky Barn Review

With a bigger budget, 505 could've had a real hit on their hands.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to turn in my gamer card for this one, but Funky Barn is a legitimately fun game. I know it sounds like shovelware garbage, and it does seem like it was built on the budget of such a title, but the farm sim is actually competent in its design, complete with an addictive game loop. Unfortunately the game's low budget is painfully obvious – from the low quality art to the long loading times to the hard freezes, Funky Barn has a healthy dose of anti-funk.

Tons of details on the title surface simultaneously.

While the Game Developers Conference isn't exactly a press event, it's become an acceptable venue to both announce games and reveal new information. Alongside the announcement came tons of details about the game, including information on the modes and gameplay features.

Birds of Steel Preview

Calling back to genres near forgotten, Birds of Steel seeks to soar.

The video game industry, much like any entertainment provider, has gone through many different trends and phases.  Genres spike in popularity and then peter down, sometimes even fading into obscurity and out of the communities conscious.  There was a time when flight sims were all the rage, now most retailers would look at you funny if you asked their opinion on which flight stick you should buy.  At times an arcade-style flight game like Ace Combat rears its head to remind the masses that the genre still exists, but we all know that the pure sim has been relegated to niche for quite some time.  Just don’t tell Konami that.

The Simpsons Arcade Game Review

Aye Carumba!

Konami brought many great, well-known beat-'em-ups to the arcades in the late 80's and early 90's, and all of them but one have made a transition to home consoles. Yes, The Simpsons Arcade Game is the last and perhaps best classic Konami beat-'em-up to be brought back, and for those who've played all the other classic Konami titles to death, there's enough variance and originality here to keep players hooked.
