Nintendo Wii U to Launch With Exclusive Survival-Horror Shooter

Sounds thrilling.

After a tongue-in-cheek teaser for a zombie game during yesterday's Nintendo Direct presentation, Ubisoft formally announced "ZombieU" today at E3. The Wii U exclusive will set players in a zombie outbreak on the streets of modern day London as thousands are ravaged by a deadly virus. The first person shooter integrates interactive elements, GamePad controls, multiplayer, and more.

Fatal Frame II Coming to the Wii in Europe

Another coup for Wii owners in the EU.

It’s been a long time since anyone has heard from the Fatal Frame series. The game debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2001, and the series became a cult hit amongst horror fans. The fourth game was developed exclusively for the Wii by Grasshopper Manufacture in 2008, but was never translated from Japanese. A remake of the second game, Crimson Butterfly, is in the works for the Wii, but until now there had been no word of the game seeing a release outside of its native country.

Silent Hill HD Collection Review

Some parts of this game may be considered violent or cruel.

Considering the slow decline that the Silent Hill series has seen in recent years—including the new and disappointing Downpour—it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that Silent Hill was once the pinnacle of video game horror. For an entire generation of gamers, the franchise has been nothing more than a blip on the radar, but there was a time when a new Silent Hill was something to be anticipated. Now with the release of Silent Hill HD Collection, those gamers can finally see where all the praise came from, and give veterans a fresh look at the saga of James Sunderland and Heather Mason.

Silent Hill: Downpour Review

More like a light drizzle.

What’s the key to great horror? More importantly, what is the key to creating great horror video games? Is it a strong, relatable character? Is it the combat? Monster designs? Atmosphere? Whatever your answer, one thing became abundantly clear to me as I played Silent Hill: Downpour: developer Vatra Games didn’t ask this one crucial question at any point in this game’s creation.

I Am Alive Review

I Am Disappointed: Beautiful at a distance, disappointing up close.

I’ve always loved the climbing aspect of the Uncharted series. Scaling larger than life structures gave the games an added sense of adventure. There was one problem though; Drake’s ascents were little more than eye candy. There was no danger, no strategy, no challenge just mash the X button until you arrive at your destination. That’s why I was so excited when I first heard about Ubisoft’s new IP, I Am Alive, which looks to meld similar Uncharted-like mechanics with the unforgiving realities of the survival horror genre. Unfortunately much like the scenery of this dystopian title, I Am Alive represents a great deal of potential that is tragically lost.

Resident Evil: Revelations Review

A thrilling new direction for the Resident Evil series.

Since the release of Resident Evil 4, there has been a division of opinions amongst longtime fans of the series. Some preferred the isolated exploration of the first four titles – including Code Veronica – whereas others favored the open world, more shooter focused style established in 4 and 5. The newest title in the series, Resident Evil: Revelations, introduces an entirely new spin on both approaches, while making some great changes to the core formula as well.

MIA - Dino Crisis

We just need some dino DNA to bring this franchise back from extinction.

Well kiddies, it’s another fantastic Friday and that means another installment of my favorite bi-weekly column Missing in Action!  For those of you not familiar with my weekly staple, MIA is a column where we pick a game or franchise out of the gutter, clean it up and present it for a current generation update.

Amy Review

A hodgepodge of survival horror concepts wrapped into one disastrous mess.

If there’s one thing that’s clear about Amy, it’s that developers, VectorCell, were in over their heads. Borrowing concepts from many of the popular titles in the survival horror genre, Amy attempts to mix puzzles, stealth, combat, escort missions, and even psi-powers in a post-apocalyptic setting crawling with aggressive monsters. The ambitious downloadable title fails to provide the necessary polished gameplay and is host to numerous technical issues, as well as poor mechanics and antiquated design.
