Battlefield 3, FIFA 12 Sell Over 10 Million Each

Also, Star Wars: The Old Republic has 1.7 million subscribers.

Electronic Arts made public its financial results for the third fiscal quarter of 2011 and it's reporting that both Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12 sold 10 million copies each across their respective platforms. It also reports that Star Wars: The Old Republic has 1.7 million active subscribers and has sold more than two million units in just a little over a month.

THQ Layoffs Total 175 Employees

VP of Tech Mark DeLoura is among those let go.

THQ announced plans for layoffs that weren't from its five main internal studios a few days ago. In light of yesterday's NASDAQ delisting threat, we now know what those cuts are going to be. It has been confirmed by Joystiq that THQ has let go 175 employees; chief among them is Mark DeLoura, Vice President of Tech.

THQ Facing NASDAQ Delisting

The publisher's share has dropped too low for NASDAQ's comfort.

THQ was once known as the publisher of dozens of licensed video games each year. Recent attempts to diversify their portfoloio has resulted in a significant drop off in their profitability, which wasn't helped by the declining popularity of the licensed game market. As a result, downsizing and layoffs have been announced and their share price has dropped below a dollar. The Saints Row publisher now faces NASDAQ delisting.

Everquest Going Free-To-Play

The original MMO is going the free route.

Way back in 1997, Sony Online Entertainment released EverQuest and introduced the MMO to a mainstream market. It's been 15 years since then and a sequel has come and gone free-to-play, and now the original is following suite. Sony Online Entertainment has announced that the original Everquest is going free-to-play.

Remember couch co-op? There was something special about having a buddy over, ordering a pizza, and flopping on the couch to marathon through a great game. That intimate kind of cooperative game play has kind of fallen by the wayside in recent years, thanks to the proliferation of stable online matchmaking. As remarkable an achievement as that is, nothing will replace the fun and energy of having a partner sitting right next to you as you triumph over a challenging game. The folks over at Obsidian haven’t forgotten about couch co-op; it’s the focal point for Dungeon Siege III, a game that is at its best when shared.

Scarygirl Review

Is she supposed to be scary because she looks like a ragdoll dressed as a pirate?

Video games are art. Many people, including myself, stand by this philosophy and when asked for an example, many of us will point to recently made indie titles like Flower, Braid, and Bastion. All of these titles are part of a renaissance of old school design that are making a comeback on the downloadable front. These highly stylized yet minimalistic games are supposed to represent video games in their purest form. At first glance, ScaryGirl looks like another great title in this tradition, but instead you get something more akin to Tim Burton presents Earthworm Jim watching Invader Zim.
