Fifteen Years Later, I’m Still Excited to Catch 'Em All

How Pokémon plans to recapture its audience in its Sixth Generation.

I was in Elementary School, at the young age of 7 when I first discovered Pokémon Red and Blue. Many people around my age will tell you similar stories about how this series first drew them into gaming. Traveling a huge world, collecting cute and cool monsters. Watching them grow and evolve. Trading and battling with friends via link cable. Everything about it kept the game alive whether I was at school, or summer camp, or at a local park. It was a feeling that not many games have been able to replicate, and now it seems X and Y are evolving the series itself even further in new and interesting ways.

Love the System: Our Favorite RPG Battle Systems

Can't get enough of these fights.

Argue all you want about which RPG has the best characters and story, but neither of those things matter nearly as much as a game’s battle system. Since we typically spend upwards of forty hours in an RPG, the bulk of that time is spent fighting foes within the rule set the designers created, so it has to be compelling enough to keep pulling us along. Sometimes, a combat system is formulated with just the right amount of intricacy, a satisfying splash of spectacle, and exactly what was needed to get in our heads and keep us plugging away until we save the world on the brink of decimation. We’ve picked our favorite RPG battle systems and wanted to explain why we love them so dearly. Maybe you’ll gain an appreciation for a combat system you felt was a drag or you’ll decide to dig into a game you never tried before. Maybe you’ll think we’re daft and forgot the real greatest system around. We’re bound to have a big assortment of faves, so read through our picks and tell us what yours is too.

Tales of Xillia Review

A Triumphant Tale, Indeed.

As a huge fan of the Tales series, I was obviously excited for Tales of Xillia, but I also came to the game with some skepticism. I was worried that some of the luster of the franchise was starting to wear off for me, as I didn’t get into last year’s Tales of Graces f as much as I thought I would. However, I was pleased to see that the series still has more than enough kick left in it. Tales of Xillia is one JRPG that shouldn’t be missed, despite some flaws.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days Review

Dark Days Now, Darker Days Ahead.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead surprised many last year, including myself, by telling one of the most memorable stories in gaming. By pairing tense scenarios with incredible characters, the episodic game caught wildfire and became a smash success, winning multiple games of the year accolades.  To no surprise, the success of season one means that a season two is inevitable, but in the meantime, Telltale decided to tease us with a DLC that gives us insight on the future of the series.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Review

One hardcore RPG.

Aside from a brief escapade with the Persona series, I pretty much have had zero experience with the Shin Megami Tensei series. The name is familiar to me, but all I knew about the series is that it’s widely loved, and has spawned many spinoff series that have all garnered some success. While I really enjoy what I’ve played of the Persona series, I still had no idea what to expect when booting up Shin Megami Tensei IV for the first time. I was afraid that I wouldn’t even like this type of game. In the early goings I felt that my fears would be confirmed, but I eventually found SMT to be enjoyable, despite being new to the franchise.

Fire Emblem Awakening Review

Let's go old school with a magazine-style three man review!

(Editor's Note: Since Fire Emblem: Awakening was translated by many ex-EGM reviewers courtesy of 8-4, I thought it would be cool to do a classic three man review. Since the PixlBit system only accepts one score per game, we're going with Julian's score, since it was based on an entire playthrough from start to finish. Enjoy!)
