My source inside Nintendo--can't even give a hint as to what department he/she is in for fear or reprisal--has given me some valuable info about Nintendo's plans. In the wake of their dismal forecasts for the year, they've gone all out to address longstanding issues that have been holding them back.

Tomb Raider was one of my favorite games this year.
I absolutely loved exploring the nooks and crannies of the island; ravenously hunting and tracking down gear for XP and salvage for upgrades; and the visceral, brutal, satisfying combat. Though the story and acting were nothing special, and I wasn't keen on the QTEs or tunnel-style playable cutscene sequences, I adored the game overall and have beaten it several times.

The "Nintendo needs to give up on making hardware" virus that has infected the internet has only strengthened in the wake of the WiiU's recent woes. On top of the usual "they need to be on other consoles" business, a more recent strain has appeared pushing for Nintendo to put out their games on mobile devices. In the wake of the declining market for dedicated handhelds, people are pushing for Nintendo to boost it's mobile presence ASAP.

Over the course of this generation, network functionality has radically changed the landscape of console gaming as we know it. No longer are games a one-and-done deal; the industry is pushing hard to present their games as longer term investments, with a slew of DLC and network features implemented to extend the life of a title for weeks, if not months, after launch. For me, though, this approach has had the opposite effect.
