Raging over a number: Game scores and the deeper issue

Posted on 09/24/2013 at 12:12 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I was browsing comments on the IGN reviews, and it seemed the big complaint most people had with Carolyn giving it a 9 out of 10 was her saying it was "profoundly misogynistic" while she is a transgender. What many were saying was it was Carolyn trying to "fit a mold" by throwing around the misogyny term to try and "fit in" more with other women video game journalists. At least, that's how it was over on IGN. Don't know how it is on other sites. But i do think that men and transgenders both should have no right to throw around the term misogynistic just to try and "be cool" with women. Look for actual misogyny instead of spouting off about random crap, folks! That's my thought on it, haha

Male objectfication in games is a thing!

I know what you mean about how men are objectified. Heck, I've personally been objectified myself. Sure, it's not sexually, but I have easy mood-swings, almost like a woman, from a psyche that's been broken by going through medical crap most people never have to even experience in life at the tender ages of 13-15. I can't be the stoic, always gonna get stuff done stereotype that men are held up to, and at times that's been questioned of me. It's a shame, really. For people saying women aren't just housemakers, they are big on men being the hardy, nails-to-the-earth group.

I think one of the best comparisions to Metal Gear Solid's character design in terms of meaning would be the series Venture Brothers. The whole purpose of the series, as stated by the makers, is failure and how these people keep on messing up, failing, being broken, overall just being human, but keep on moving forward through it all. From what I've seen and read of Metal Gear, it seems very similar in that respect. Something I like very much.

Makes sense. It feels great in my hands, though, so I don't notice it. That's common with me though. I hear many people say the PS3 controller is too small for their hands, but it's perfect for me and I love it. I think Sony products just have a bit more of the smaller crowd in mind since they're Japan-based. Since most Americans are taller and proportionately have larger hands, it would make sense then.

I wish this was real... Some of my favorite things, all packed into one. James Bond, Japan, schoolgirls, schoolgirls in undeniably sexy situations... Yummy. Now excuse me while I go apologize to the girl with me in my profile pic, haha

They somewhat did. The camera can now be controlled with the right analog stick, although it is still a little wonky. They also mapped interaction to the triangle button like in KH2, so you no longer have to keep going to the bottom of the command menu. The camera can still be a little wonky at times, but much better than I remember it.

My one and only complaint is the issue with the targeting of enemies when not locked on. Too many times has it for some reason made me target the enemy farthest from me that I can not hit when there's enemies literally right next to me.

Quiet has actually got me sold on MGS5 now, as a person that has never played any Metal Gear games. I know about the series and how everyone is broken to some degree in it, which makes me really wonder about Quiet's story. I mean, if anyone can justify a sexy and revealing character in a game, it's Kojima. That man has a reason for EVERYTHING in his games, or so I've heard.

Ouch... I teared up at the section where they had to dive into that person's stomach. I've felt that kinda pain, and it's not fun seeing it happen even in a game. The bowels being moved around while the stomach has been cut open... Sends shivers down my spine remembering waking up from having half my torso cut open and taking out the large bowel. And to think the pain could have even been worse like that character was experiencing. Yikes....

I think you're missing the point. The system itself cost more to make than you bought it for. That's why they have the proprietary memory cards. That way, you can use the system, but if you want a lot of downloaded stuff, you need to buy the cards which ends up bringing the price you payed for the system closer to its production value. I too am a PS+ subscriber. I manage just fine with either a 6 or 8gb card though. It's because after I play through a game on my Vita, I delete it. I can always redownload it if I want to play it again. I've downloaded things such as Black Rock Shooter, Persona 3 Portable, etc, and played through them and then deleted it from my card. It's no big deal. It's not like I'm going to be playing 5 different games at the same time. Heck, you can still get the free games with PS+ without downloading them, so it's not like you miss out on anything either.

It would be pointless even responding to greenman, as thinking the 2DS is a great idea is just a clear cut sign of thinking everything Nintendo does is great. But the Vita and Vita TV are now one in the same. The Vita TV will even have almost, if not all, of the same UI as the regular Vita, just on the TV. The Vita isn't ill-conceived, so much as it's more just something that at it's price point and targeted audience, is clear to struggle in America. Vita and PSP do GREAT in Japan, because they play a lot of handhelds and have a more compact environment so you can run into people more who are playing games like that. One of those examples is Monster Hunter. Here in the West, just like the DS, the 3DS gets many of its sales from the casual market. The Vita has more niche games and core gamer games, which isn't as large of a population. What needs to be done is get more Western developers working on the Vita (which is slowly happening) and bring over some of the big-name games from Japan that would surely sell, just corporate politics and all make it a hassle. I have a Vita, and love it. It works great, has beautiful graphics on an amazing screen, and is easy to use. But, at the same time, I'm a (hard)core and niche gamer who gets things such as Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, Ragnarok Odyssey, etc.

The Vita is not ill-conceived. It's a great device, at an admittedly high-end price for a handheld (which has been remedied some), that just got poor support from SCEA and western developers. Place the "blame" where it belongs, instead of dragging down a good console that more people should get to experience.
