Admittedly, I played only a handful of retail games on Wii U --NintendoLand, ZombiiU, NSMB: U and Scribblenauts -- but so far what I feel was the best experience I had with the gamepad is with the downloadable Nano Assault Neo. It feels like 2-player LAN multi, but it's not, it's all available through one system and the gamepad.
Another feaure I like, which I discovered when playing NSMB: U, was propping the gamepad in its cradle to view, and then using a Wii remote to control. Sadly, this variation disabled audio on the gamepad as this combination presumed I was using the TV, but I like the idea of using a seperate controller instead of the gamepad input, and using the gamepad solely for viewing. I thought about writing to NIntendo about this. Maybe I will.
