A goodbye to Ryan Davis

Julian did a nice tribute here:

I never listened to the bombcasts but I spend some time on Giant Bomb.  From what I understand he seemed like a nice guy with a smart and biting wit, who had his whole life ahead of him.  Sad.

Publishers: A Necessary Evil

Posted on 07/08/2013 at 05:22 PM | Filed Under Feature

I think our system now of big publishers making AAA games and indies making small games is good.  I just wish there was more of a middle-ground, with more medium sized games getting made.  I think this is true for the PC, where you don't have the cost of retail release.  But I think a situation where you have everything from huge corporations to medium sized companies to small indie groups making games is ideal.

I was looking at this the other day.  Glad you reviewed it.  It's a shame that anything this chill looking could be so frustrating.

like Justin, I agree that bad taste is not a crime. The thing is, we all say things that are screwed up to somebody, and now with the government scanning all our transmissions for stuff who know who will be dragged away kicking and screaming. What happened to this country?  I was never perfect, but it seems like things are getting insane!

The Ugly Truth: How Fanboys Reflect the Worst of Human Nature

I prefer the PS3 to the Xbox 360, but if I were to argue for the 360, I would note the triggers on the controller, the more dependable online (PSN pisses me off all the time) -- but then you have to pay to play games online (which you'll have to do anyway on PS4 and the One).  Some people really like Xbox exclusives better too, like Halo and Gears and the Witcher, etc, but for my money I prefer the Sony games.

yeah the Jaguar sucked, I had one of those, ha ha.  There are obviously some things that are more clear than others, but I think most of the time this stuff is varying shades of gray, depending on one's own vision and preferences.  A person can argue, with merit, that a PC is better for gaming than a console, and a console person can argue, with merit, the same about their system.  It really depends.

I think what's great about our society is we have the choice between these things and we can pick what's most suitable for our own tastes.

I think the problem is that most people consider their opinions facts.  For instance, believing the SNES is a better system than the Genesis is a just that -- a belief.  Likewise, believing the Genesis is a better system than the SNES is equally an opinion.  People like different things.  It's like arguing which color is greater than another.  The trouble is when people believe their opinion is a concrete reality, when there really isn't any such thing. Why a First Person Metroid Was More Important than a 2D Donkey Kong

Yeah I would be more excited about a new Metroid game too.  I guess Donkey Kong is cool, but I guess it's more popular with others than it is with me.
