Under-Appreciated Awesomeness: Retro FPS edition

Posted on 12/13/2018 at 08:44 PM | Filed Under Blogs

My kind of blog post. Ion Maiden is the one I'm interested the most. The only FPS I can remember getting stumped by the environment was Duke Nuke 'Em 3D and Hexen 2.

Some of these 'new old-school' games are too referential of the games that influenced them.  "Hey, remember when Duke said this or when Blood did that?" (wink, wink). We get it, you were there when Doom/Hexen/Quake came out. Or you pretend you weren't still in your dad's balls when those games came out lol.

Dammit, JRPG's!

It must be because of console memory limitations. PC RPGs routinely let you have 6 characters at once. Well at least we're past that godawful stage where during the PS1 and 2 days where JRPGs only let you have 3 character parties.

Marvel's Spider-Man Review

Posted on 09/27/2018 at 09:43 PM | Filed Under Review

Why did they think anyone wanted to play as Mary Jane with weak sauce stealth mechanics, or a Peter Parker who doesn't use his abilities?  At least during the Bruce Wayne segments in the beginning of Arkham City, you got to kick ass and make an escape.  It was a great way to kick off that masterpiece.

On a side note, why even bother with gameplay styles that they either have no experience or skill in implementing or are unwilling to flesh out. You can't just slap together decent stealth.  I've never come across any half assed stealth system that was any fun to play. It just results in tedium and drag the pace of the game down (remember Shadow of Rome?).

Damn, you finished the game in two days?

I just bought the new indie platformer, The Messenger. Was thinking of submitting a review of it, but I doubt I'll even get around to beating it within a week's time.

PS2 and More

Don't have to play stealth in Deus Ex, it's famous for the various ways you can play. I usually use a combination of approaches when I play (which is usually once a year)

Monkey Island is meant to be played with mouse I think, so you can click exactly where you want him to go. That's why I seldom played PC-to-console ports back in the day, it was just apples and oranges in terms of the controls they were designed around. Half-Life was pretty good on PS2 though.

in keeping with the series, Maximo is no cakewalk. Game is about patience.  I don't think a Souls comparison would be out of place this time around.
