I remember throwing my SNES controller to the floor many times, or just dropping it, mostly because of the Ice levels of Donkey Kong Country. It was on carpet, so no harm done. Those SNES controllers were pretty hard to break and I never worried too much about them. Today, I just make a mock gesture of throwing the controller at the TV screen. It's really unthinkable now with those things costing $60 to replace. Plus today's controllers are high tech gadgets themselves, not just a piece of plastic housing a tiny board with buttons on it.
