Meet Justin: Going to jail 9 years for a sarcastic quip!

Posted on 07/12/2013 at 08:41 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Supposedly what he did, making a "terroristic threat," is actually a federal crime.  But I agree, it's really stupid that he was arrested for it.

At the same time, I'm kind of torn on things like this.  I would assume (I actually haven't read it) that the law is written as it is so they can lock up true terrorists and not give them wiggle room.  The problem is that with such straight-forward laws, they can then be applied to people like that who just have poor taste in jokes.

It's kind of like how i feel about other laws like statutory rape.  Take an example where a teenager gets charged with sleeping with his younger teenage girlfriend, who he has been with since they were both below age of consent.  I think it's beyond dumb that he could go to jail for that.  At the same time, I understand why a line has to be drawn in order to charge the true offenders, and that line is age.  Otherwise, the true bad guys will have more loopholes to go through.

Hopefully when it comes to trial the judge will throw it out.  I seriously doubt he will serve any more jail time than he has prior to making bail, but dumber things have happened.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days Review

I really enjoyed it.  I thought, for the most part, they did an amazing job of getting you involved in each of the stories even though they were only 15 minutes or so apiece.

There was one thing that bugged me though.  I played the PS3 version, and after I was done, the stats showed that every decision I made was made by exactly 50% of other players.  I find this hard to believe.  I saw someone mention the same thing on a message board on another site.  I beat it on the 3rd day of release, so I'm thinking it was probably a bug.  I've always enjoyed seeing the stats at the end of each chapter showing how others played compared to me.

Awesome Cover Songs!

There's several cover songs I really like, some I can't think of right now.  Here's the first one that came to mind, since you led with Tori Amos covering Nirvana.  Here's Jawbox covering Tori Amos.  I love this song.

Im Now The Proud Owner Of A Wii U

Posted on 07/11/2013 at 09:10 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I'm looking forward to a few Wii U games, like Super Mario 3D World, the HD Zelda Windwaker, and defintely the new Pikman.

But so far I've been really disappointed. The only games I have for it (besides punch-out and kirby, which I got for 30 cents on the virtual console) are New Super Mario Brothers and Nintendoland.  Nothing else has really looked that appealing to me. I was curious about Zombie U, but after the reviews I was kind of turned off. For the past 6 months or so the only thing I have really done with it is use it as a Netflix device.  Hopefully that will change in the near future.

Blake's Top 10 TV Comedies of All Time!

Blackadder is mentioned a couple times in here and I've seen it listed on a few "Best TV Shows of All Time" lists.  I'm curious about it, but considering I despise Mr. Bean, I'm kind of hesistant to give it a chance.  So my question for anybody reading this who  has seen BlackAdder is - Is it anything at all like Mr. Bean, and will my hatred for Mr Bean affect my feelings towards Blackadder?

Great list.  Although I would change up the order a lot and some of them probably wouldn’t make the top ten, I count almost all of these among my favorites (with the exception of Louie, which I’ve never seen).

Some other favorites are the Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, The Simpsons, Eastbound and Down, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Futurama,  Freaks and Geeks, King of the Hill, 30 Rock, and although it's stupid, Beavis and Butthead.

Lauded Sci-fi Author Richard Matheson dies at 87

I've been meaning to read some of his books for awhile now.  I liked the films the Omega Man and I am Legend.

I didn't know he had written Twilight zone episodes.  By a crazy coincidence, I recently started watching all the episodes starting from the first.  I’m still near the beginning, so I don’t think I have seen any that weren’t written by Rod Sterling yet.

I actually liked the movie The Box (the movie you mentioned based on Button, Button), although I wouldn’t call it great.  It was written and directed by the guy who did Donnie Darko (a movie that I love).  Although it used the same basic concept as a framing device, I wouldn’t really call it a remake.  After the initial set-up it goes into an entirely different direction.

Christianity - Why I don't Like It

Posted on 06/24/2013 at 03:40 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I was raised southern Baptist.  Although I had my doubts earlier, it wasn’t until college that I would even admit to myself that I thought it was all bullshit.  It’s kind of tough to admit that something you believed for most of your life just makes no sense whatsoever.  I now call myself an atheist, but I guess I’m really an agnostic who just heavily leans towards there being no god.

Living in the south (of the united states), it can be kind of tough being an atheist.  Pretty much everyone assumes everyone else is a god-fearing Christian and to not a cause a scene I typically just play along unless I know the person well.  At my work someone always gives a prayer prior to any type of food gathering we do.

I do find religion fascinating though. It’s just amazing to me that such a large percentage of the world’s population has complete faith in something that seems so absolutely ridiculous to those that don’t believe.  And the fact that there are (and have been) so many different religions, all whose followers are so certain that their religion is the correct one.  It’s funny to me to hear a Christian talk about how crazy something like Scientology is.  Yes, it’s nuts, but take a look at what you believe!  I took a couple classes on world religions when I was in college and have read the bible in its entirety twice.  Just yesterday I received an English-language quran from amazon.com that I plan on reading soon.

This is no escort mission!

I can't wait to play the Last of Us.

I used to love Skate or Die back in the day for the NES.  I don't think it was ever an arcade game though, although I could be wrong.  Are you thinking of 720 degrees?  That was a skating arcade game that said "skate or die" whenever you ran out of time, and then bees would start chasing after you.

Update: gaming and reading

Posted on 06/21/2013 at 08:23 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I only got around to reading Ringworld (and it's sequels) in the last couple years.  I've always been a big science fiction fan, but Larry Niven was one of the few classic sci-fi authors I hadn't read.  I decided to order a bunch of Niven books off of ebay (I think i got about 15 books for about $35!) and read most of them over a month or so.  I enjoyed the ringworld books, but I liked some of his other ones even more.  I can't remember off the top of my head my favorites, but I remember one of my favorites was The Mote in Gods Eye.

I've also been planning to order the box set the A Song of Ice and Fire series.  I just started the tv series recently and have been really enjoying it.
