It seems strange to me that they are also releasing this on Nintendo's download services. Though I wonder if the retail version will have a limited production run for various reasons, and so they have these to fall back on.

I sure did forget the score, let me fix that.
As far as graphics are concerned, it's all relative, and done by Nintendo 64/1990's standards.
New Super Mario Brothers wasn't a follow-up to Super Mario 64 DS. It didn't build on the game engine or anything like that.
It might be cynical, but I think you are looking into things too much. Nintendo is a company who loves to re-release and rehash content, and Nintendo 64 games are pretty good candidates for that: they are early 3D games which can benefit from modern hardware. Nintendo's track record for handhelds tells all. Did anything ever come of all those Mario game ports? The Game Boy Advance never even got a new Mario game. The DS launched with a remake of Super Mario 64, and it was never followed up with anything either.
The Game Boy characters were pretty generic, so it is really no loss.
The Game Boy Advance launched in April. Why not a 3DS launch in March?
I think it'll be out in Japan in November or December, but I don't see that happening for North America.
Oh hey, another Nintendo 64 game? Awesome. Mario Tennis may be one of the first Mario sports titles, but it's still an excellent game. It's light on features, but the core gameplay is solid and enjoyable. I actually prefer it over Mario Power Tennis, for some reason. Probably because of the power shots and gimmick courts, which don't seem to fit in with the gameplay, for some odd reason. In any case, any fan of Mario and/or tennis shouldn't hesitate to download it.
I'm not bored of shooters, but rather, I feel they've become too overbloated with useless fluff and features that lessen the enjoyment. The Conduit didn't do that, but I guess they didn't learn from it.
This sounds like a fun and interesting concept, I always like puzzle and logic games. The only thing I'm concerned with is price, as this doesn't sound like it has enough content to warrant the $50 tag. Any word on pricing yet?
