Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Review

Posted on 10/26/2017 at 10:54 PM | Filed Under Review

It's definitely as gorgeous as 4. IMO TLOU is a much better example of letting the game breathe. The opening isn't too long and functions well for world building, the interludes stay with the flow of the game rather than grinding it to a halt, and it follows the quieter moments at the right spots rather than at more random times like in 4. There's a right and wrong way to execute every concept and 4 definitely did it wrong IMO.

Oh okay. If you establish that early, that would be hilarious then. And yeah, I was fine with the Robin Williams thing, but you gotta remember what people are like nowadays. Just having him negotiate not going to hell in general over suicide (no matter how it's handled), while a creative idea, is gonna ruffle some feathers.

Pretty good job dude. I really like the angle you're taking and some jokes are pretty damn great. Only gripe is there's a bit too much pop culture references here. Feel dieties wouldn't give two shits about Bradley Cooper or even Trump. The Robin Williams one works still, but feel it would be funnier if that was the only celebrity these guys knew who he was and no one else, not even the president. Though I'm unsure if others feel mentioning him would be in poor taste.

Either way would love to hear more from this.

I think there's a way to keep what's old while introducing something new. Take Pokemon Sun and Moon, that series was a punching bag for never changing (and I gobbled all of them up btw), but the newest ones removed the Gyms in favor of island trials. Instead of facing against eight strong trainers, sometimes it would be a swarm of wild Pokemon, other times it would be a super strong one that can call on backup, and it still had the strong trainers. You still trained a team of Pokemon you caught and faced against a new gang called Team "Fill in the blank", so newcomers still got the Pokemon experience, but it was done differently. Mario and Zelda do a good job at this too, even NSMB2 and U, which got bashed the most over this, were trying new ideas. Not to say they should always reinvent the wheel. Sonic tries that and can never build on anything because nothing ever gets refined.

I think there's a happy medium. Some kids will be playing their first Mario with Odyssey. But they'll still be able to go back and see the FLUDD, space, and co-op of past games. Those games will feel distinct. I mean, as much as I love the Gameboy and DS Pokemon games, I have a really hard time recommending them over the 3DS ones with the quality of life improvements made. I think by just sticking too close, there's no reason to go back to the past which can have its own consequences.

Also not a good idea for MP focused games. Call of Duty never changes and it's nearly impenetrable for newcomers.

The Games of the Famicom Classic Edition

If your TV has any USB ports, you can just plug the Famicom Mini's into that so you don't need an outlet. What I do with the SNES Mini. Cool you got one of these. No Tecmo Bowl would be a deal breaker for me though, it's one of my favorite NES games. But it is cool that it has FF3 over 1, it's a neat game for an NES title.

Looking forward to your write up on the SNES Classic. That's such an awesome machine.

I actually prefer holding R for missiles in Metroid. I started with Fusion and Zero Mission, so using Select feels too slow for me while holding a shoulder button is instant. Granted, the 3DS isn't the best system for that, but I still prefer it over Select, especially in the faster paced Metroids like Fusion, ZM, and SR.

Best Super NES games? What are they?

Out of those I definitely agree with the first four and Chrono Trigger. Not that big a fan of FFVI or Yoshi's Island (gonna give them another spin on SNES mini though) and haven't played the others. Some I'd add are Donkey Kong Country 2, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Mega Man X, The Lion King, Kirby's Superstar, Earthworm Jim, Earthbound, at least one Street Fighter game, and Super Castlevania IV

Forgettable Games

Posted on 10/07/2017 at 08:27 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Most walking sims end up pretty forgettable to me, though Gone Home might have been the most bland of them. Only one that stood out was Stanley Parable, it's short, but it's also meant to be replayed about a dozen times.

As for forgettable games, Uncharted 1 is top of that list. I've played it twice and think I remember one or two moments from it. Assassin's Creed games without a number also fit that bill, they always feel more bland and uninspired even if none of them are as bad as 3. Also to be super controversial, Red Dead Redemption and The Witcher 3.

Episode 120: Monumental

Stage Select

3. The Witcher 3- I don't think this is a bad game, but I'm baffled as to why TW3 is considered one of the best RPGs ever. Every element is good, but has at least one flaw really holding it back. Novigrad (a huge chunk of the game) was an endless stream of boring fetch quests. And moral choices doesn't work on defined characters like Geralt. I like the game, I gave it a good review on Pixlbit. But it's nothing great or special.

2. Mortal Kombat- The only reason this game is successful is because of the gore. Take that away and there is nothing good about it. It's not even good gore either, we were just that desperate for some blood in the 90's.

1. GTA IV- I've never felt like a sandbox game was working so hard against me having fun and I played Assassin's Creed 3. Every single element of this open world was a failure. A game called Grand Theft had driving controls are so awful that they feel unplayable. On foot, the Niko felt clunky and had that horrible "tap A/X to sprint" idea. Both of these made doing random crap, what made GTA popular, a chore. And those very rare instances where I started to enjoy chaotic GTA antics, Roman would ruin it with "HEY NIKO WANT TO PLAY DARTS?" The only redeeming element was the story, which still clashed horribly with the open world gameplay and GTA goofiness. It sucks as a GTA game and an open world game period.

Chrono Crossing

My 1988 pick is Phantasy Star. I can waver back and forth between that and the good version of Super Mario Bros 2, but at the end of the day, it's an 8 bit RPG that held my attention for over half an hour (much longer actually), so it gets the edge.

In which summer held on for a bit longer, walking everywhere sucks and I give in to early Pokemon.

Gold and Silver are two games I'll never get bored with, but I can see people having a hard time going back to them. A lot of quality of life touches went into the DS and 3DS games to perfect the formula. But it's still a damn great time.

Also, go Fire. I normally pick Grass, but the Fire starter is just miles ahead of the other two in this game.
