PlayBit Tonight: Dungeon Defenders

Posted on 10/24/2011 at 01:30 AM | Filed Under Feature

Does anyone want to see this uploaded so they can watch it? It's a long video, and because of that I haven't yet. The gameplay doesn't heat up until the second half, either, but it's just in one piece. If anyone's interested, I'll be glad to do it, but I'd like to know there's some interest before doing so.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Review

Posted on 10/21/2011 at 09:46 PM | Filed Under Review

"Games that are awarded two stars are below average titles. Good ideas may be present, but execution is poor and many issues hinder the experience."

In my book, it resembles this more. The lack of a real, genuine feeling of co-op or even counter-op tactics with multiplayer shows that there were some good ideas there. The variety of guns that all kind of don't work well, and the ineffective, difficult weapon wheel are good ideas, but the execution is poor. And of course, the glitches I've experienced? Poor execution.

I'd say it's fair to agree to disagree. I would imagine it does help to be familiar with the Ratchet & Clank series, and knowing the characters and world, being introduced to them as intended, would probably help me better value the events and characters in the game, as well. One thing is for sure: We both were disappointed by this game, and were really hoping it would be a lot more for a few basic reasons.

I still think it deserves a lower score. I've never played a game that was devoid of fun at multiplayer. Generally, the idea I've always seen executed was something along the lines of "terrible game + extra players = fun." That's just how co-op works. You bring someone else into the living room with you, and things become more fun.

This game breaks that rule. Adding extra players doesn't increase the fun. My time playing the game with Chris was nothing anywhere close to sensational, and it actually felt very similar to my time playing single player later on. The only difference? I didn't have to rush to break open the hundreds of hundreds of boxes all over the stages to get more bolts.

As far as I can collect, it looks like players are randomly booted from online sometimes, which is what seems to have happened to me. I was playing alone in a game I was hosting, in case any other PixlBit staff popped online and wanted to play. Twice, I was booted out, losing major chunks of progress.

Anyway, like I said, it's rare to find a game where there isn't any extra fun added in playing together, especially in the same room, but R&C All4One manages to do just that. I'd personally give it something like 2 stars, maybe more if it improved any from where I left off, but that's just me.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Review

I want to note this game is only compatible with a WEP network and not a WPA one. For those who can't consistently control their wireless network encryption, I think that's a very important thing to say that doesn't directly affect the quality of the game.

PlayBit Tonight: Cancelled!

I'll get into it on tomorrow's review, but I think it is a bad game. Any game that takes co-op and makes it completely without fun is not a good game in my book. Add in the glitches I stumbled into which lost me all progress in the stages I was playing, and it's even less fun. But yeah, I'll get into tomorrow in response to the review.

The Hidden (Official Trailer)

Played this at E3... I hate to say it, but it wasn't a very impressionable demo. The game wasn't too very bold, and seemed to mimic a lot of things already available at the time I played it, particularly Face Invaders. The "Augmented Reality" of playing anywhere didn't really do all that much, either. It just means you can't always play where you want to play. Sometimes you'll even be asked to return to an earlier place you were playing to complete some missions. That aspect sounds interesting, but since the game doesn't use any real-world markers, it's still just spinning around to find things to target.

Unfortunately, I don't have my notes with me about it, but I believe there's four different gameplay styles, and missions that utilize each one, though none of them seemed all that interesting.

Recapping Ratchet & Clank

Now I've got to wonder... how many Ratchet and Clank titles are there in total? We're on #8 I think...

And people complain about there being too many Mario games! At least they're in different genres.

Sony Releases New Owner's Kit

I disagree. PS3 controllers can be found for a little less than their MSRP at this point, and quality HDMI cables can be bought online on the cheap. USB cables are all over the place and very inexpensive. This bundle is more or less a mark-up on the components if the consumer were to buy them separately and intelligently.

Don't believe me? I typed "hdmi" into amazon, and this was the first result.

Save your money folks, and shop smarter. Don't go for this extra-expensive bundle. Some might say it's a matter of convenience to buy this bundle pack, but is convenience worth $20 more in expenses? Not to mention, Amazon.com and other online retailers are pretty convenient, too.

I've got to agree with a lot of your picks, perhaps excluding Vortex. I don't dig techno.

I loved Super Mario RPG's music. It's memorable to this day, as is all the rest, especially that found in Chrono Trigger...

But I think Super Metroid music is even better than you give it credit for. I find myself "thinking" the music on a regular basis, particular the boss music and whenever a building is going to blow up.

Well... Round one of the game was kind of a dud. Two freezes where I couldn't advance, so I called it a night. We'll be trying round 2 come Thursday, so join us then!
