BaD - Gaming Under the Influence #5

Posted on 02/09/2018 at 01:58 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I got the Dreamcast for Christmas in 1999, too!

I hated it when the dot com bubble burst.  Before then I was high on the hog writing for The Dallas Morning News and when I graduated college in 1999, companies were asking ME to write for them!  I even brought multiple company business cards with me to E3 that year!  But right after that, everyone backed out, the dot com boom went to bust, and it's been all downhill from there.  Even my dad agrees with me that I've had bad timing and luck with that, so it makes me feel good that at least one other person understands what was going on then.

BaD # 6- SNES Classics & Crap

I loved the SNES.  It's my favorite console and I'm glad I got the SNES Mini.  I knew it wouldn't have ALL the games I wanted on it, but it would've been neat to have ActRaiser, Chrono Trigger, the rest of the DKC games, Kirby's Dream Land 3, FF4, Lufia 2, Mario Paint, and many more!

BaD #6: Captain Commando

Even though it was a generic beat 'em up, I just loved the character designs in Captain Commando.  You could be a baby driving a mech, and then you could hop into an even bigger mech!  There was a Captain Commando arcade machine at a gas station near my house back then, and my friends and I would play it all the time.

Mario Kart 64 is my third favorite Mario Kart game.  I played it so much with friends in college.

I rented Blast Corps once.  Kind of reminded me of Lemmings mixed with Rampage.

I got to review Turok for the newspaper back then.  The developers of that game were in Austin: Iguana Studios, and I interviewed them several times for school projects in college.  Many of the folks from that team went on to become Retro Studios.

I played a demo of Croc and didn't like it, so I never got the game.  There's some interesting rumors and history behind Croc, like it originally was going to be a 3-D  Yoshi game.

PaRappa the Rapper was more fun to watch than to play.  I could probably recite all the lyrics to the second song level in that game.

"Here we are, just sittin' in the car.  I want you to show me if you can go far.  Step on the gas...etc. etc."

Diddy Kong Racing was an awesome game, but it was the game that also caused me to get a PlayStation because that was the N64's big holiday release that year and I wasn't satisfied with just that.

Yoshi's Story was fun, but ultimately disappointing compared the the great Yoshi's Island.  And yes that is the game that started Yoshi's annoying voice.  I liked his 16-bit 'bree-burp' sound better.  Sounded like someone stepped on a duck.

Some new toys: Battle Beasts/Beast Saga

Gosh, I'm a child of the 80's and I don't remember those at all!  And I was into Transformers, too, for a while. But I did start to get out of it after the first animated movie.

Well, some of my favorite KOF characters include Leona Heidern, Shermie, Vanessa, and Blue Mary.  I do have a Fatal Fury hat like Terry Bogard wears, though.  SNK gave it to me at E3 a long time ago.

Considering that it's been more than 20 years since I reviewed DKC3, I don't remember much of what I wrote.  I'm sure I gave it a good review, though.

The Beetlejuice cartoon won an Emmy back then.

I've never used Twitter.

BaD #5: Block Block

I remember Block Block on the Capcom collection.  You could also play it on the Capcom Puzzle Collection that also included Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo on the PSP.  I prefer Arkanoid, though.

Super Mario RPG was a big deal back then because it was a joint venture from Square and Nintendo.  Even though there are other Mario RPGs I like better now, Super Mario RPG is still an excellent game and I played it to death.

Super Mario 64 was pretty amazing back then, too.  I remember getting it when I was in college.  It's one of the few Mario games I've gotten all the stars on.

All right, you're going to hate me, but I'm going to see if you can guess my favorite King of Fighters characters now!

Tomb Raider was such a big deal back then.  I like the idea of a female Indiana Jones type character, but the games just didn't appeal to me.  Maybe if Lara Croft had a pink dinosaur sidekick who threw cupcakes at bad guys or something.

Donkey Kong Country 3 was a special game to me because it was one of the first games I reviewed for The Dallas Morning News.  Yeah that's how long I've been doing this. :)

Since I've been blind in my left eye since birth, I never did any of the Virtual Boy stuff
