Played it on release, NES. Still the best Mario, 2D or 3D, in my estimation. Nothing was wasted in this game. Even the map was a (board)game in itself.

Ni Oh, Zelda, Torment: Tides of Numenara
Seeing and playing this game for the first time was a watershed moment. It was on my friend's NES when we were in elementary school. I knew nothing about it, didn't even know the game existed. But from the moment I saw the opening animation to the defeat if the first boss, my life changed. I was transfixed. The atmosphere and sounds of the game mesmerized me. It was a whole new level of that video games had ascended to, in my eyes. The music compositions were unparalleled in their originality (for games) and catchiness. Nothing looked or sounded as good, or was as compelling to play To put it simply: I was awestruck.
To date, this series still sits among the very top of the heap, and the gothic horror/fantasy genre is still one of my favorites due to this game and its successors. There was just something about the genre, this game, that music that spoke to my being, as if it were crafted just for me or someone had peered into my soul and made a game from whatever its contents suggested. A definitive touchstone in my life.
Game is full of bad ideas. Worst Battlefront so far. I wish today's developers would stop fucking with proven standards from the past.
Pool of Radiance and the other Goldbox games still have some of the best tactical combat you can find in CRPGs. This kind of combat (with individual unit movement) never caught on in Japan in mainstream JRPGs, which is why I came to prefer games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, etc.
I don't remember any bitter arguments on 1up, not with you. I remember one time someone came on to another person's blog and called me an asshole because I criticized Bioshock or Fallout 3. Was that you? And I had a tendency to shit on PC gaming haters/console weaboo fanboys and their weak-assed arguments a few years ago.
Looking back at your 1up comments, we seem to share similar tastes,on Skyrim, on Uncharted/Naughty Dog, on Dark Souls, PC games, indies. But I seem to be one of the few (kind of ) politically right leaning people on game sites, so maybe it was a political disagreement ¯\_("/)_/¯ .
Anyway, if you blogged here like you did there, this place would be a lot more interesting.
While FF is dated and not as impressive as it was at release, the SNES port is not a good representation of the game, being severely altered due to hardware limitations. Since your blog is not labeled 'Retro Console Game of the Week,' I think you do the game a disservice by limiting your attention to a frankly poor port instead of assessing it in its undiluted form, which is the arcade/MAME rom version, or at least the PS2 or XBL/PSN ports. Especially when making comparison to Streets of Rage, of which you used its best version and not the lesser SMS or Game Gear ports.
Your mom's house.
I don't remember anything about that year besides some things you just reminded me of. Was counting the days until The Two Towers. Saw all those other movies too, except for Goldmember and Nemesis. played Dark Alliance, played Eternal Darkness, played SoE (a thin game that never reached its potential). Probably attended a lot of life drawing sessions. Probably played Deus Ex again. Did a Tony Hawk game come out that year?
My internet is too slow, so digital downloads are far from convenient in most cases. It would take me days to download any modern 3D game.
Ha, you need an intervention!
