Is Microsoft's All-In-One Strategy Forward-Thinking--Or Backwards?

Posted on 05/25/2013 at 07:30 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Microsoft needs to do a LOT to clear the air, and prove that the platform is really worth the investment. It's amazing how tone deaf and cagey they've been about a lot of those issues. I suspect (as some of the avalanche of rumors state) that they either haven't finalized anything or are being forced to change course due to the horrible reception they've been getting.

Regardless of how good or bad the system ends up, this was probably one of the worst reveals of any console from a purely PR standpoint.

The Next Generation?

Trust me, it's really not that hard. You can get whole systems from custom sites as well as retailers like Newegg.com and Micro Center, then upgrade the parts over time as needed.

Seeing how this next generation of consoles is panning out, I'm glad I've put down money on upgrading my PC. I've already been getting a lot out of it while my PS3 has collected dust for months.

They're trying way too many things at once with this IMO, and have clearly designed it around a tunnel vision mentality. It's a damn shame, really.

LMAO XD

It amazes me how these consoles seems to lose as much functionality as they gain as time goes on.

Sure, the PS2 didn't have all the media functionality and networking stuff built in. But I could easily sell, trade-in and borrow games for it, it was fully backwards compatible, and doesn't require a connection to the internet to authenticate games or just use the console for more than a day.

This is Sony's battle to lose at this point. If they confirm that the console doesn't have the same bullshit levels as MS, then they have a more consumer-friendly and powerful device that knows it's a console and provides free netplay. That's a much more attractive deal, especially if they're at similar price points.

You're hardly alone on that one.

Nice to see you man. :)

Don't get why MS is doing any of this stuff, frankly. I just hope Sony doesn't follow suit. -_-

Almost ALL the worst rumors about the console have been proven true, at least in part. MS has to explain themselves big-time on this. Exclusive DLC is not gonna make up for this nonsense.

I don't know why they aren't pouncing all over this when they need those clicks, though. Why let Kotaku have the spoils? :p
