We have it in my library's tech center. They do demonstrations of it (Oculus Rift I think) for the public regularly. I should go to one.
The headset needs to be like sunglasses to really take off. Maybe some sort of augmented reality addtion to normal gaming might work. Someone was making smart glasses recently. I wonder what's up with that technology.
I tried it once and got overwelmed by all the job choices. I've always wanted to go try it again.
